Chapter 4 - The Poison Inside the Walls

Life inside the Rossy estate underwent a seismic, unbelievable shift over the following three weeks.

Norah Bennett went from scrubbing porous marble floors with a yellow bucket to having a massive, state-of-the-art professional kitchen entirely at her personal disposal. The remaining kitchen staff—terrified of losing their high-paying positions after Lauron’s dramatic exit—quickly realized that the new culinary director held absolute favor with the boss. They scrambled to assist her in any way possible, prepping vegetables, sourcing organic ingredients, and treating her with a level of deference they had never shown anyone else.

Yet, Norah refused to change her core philosophy. She ignored the multi-thousand-dollar imported truffles and rare caviars, focusing instead on simple, wholesome, comforting dishes: rich bone broths simmered for twelve hours, rustic vegetable stews, slow-cooked beef barley soups, and fresh, crusty sourdough bread baked from scratch.

Upstairs in the master study, Vincent Rossy was undergoing a miraculous physical resurrection.

With every comforting meal Norah prepared, his body slowly regained its strength. The hollow sunken cheeks filled out, the persistent nausea vanished completely, and the bespoke Milanese suits began to fit his broad shoulders properly once again. For the first time in half a year, Vincent was eating three full meals a day, working long hours at his desk without dizziness, and reclaiming absolute control over his vast criminal syndicate.

He and Norah developed an unspoken routine. Every evening at precisely 7:00 PM, Vincent would walk down to the kitchen or have Enzo bring a simple ceramic bowl to his study. They would talk briefly—not about syndicate business, guns, or territory wars, but about simple things: childhood memories, old neighborhoods in Brooklyn, favorite books, and the quiet comfort of ordinary life outside the violent fishbowl of the mob.

For Vincent, Norah’s presence became an unexpected anchor of absolute safety in a world full of daggers in the dark.

For Norah, her fifty-thousand-dollar debt to the loan shark had been completely wiped out on her very first day—Vincent’s enforcers had paid a brief, highly persuasive visit to the loan shark, who subsequently fled the state of New York forever. Norah was finally free, safe, and respected.

However, peace in a criminal empire is never permanent.

Beneath the polished surface of the estate, invisible currents of resentment were beginning to churn. Viktor Vance—Vincent’s ambitious, calculating cousin and senior syndicate underboss—watched Vincent’s miraculous recovery with growing alarm and bitter jealousy. Viktor had been quietly counting on Vincent’s slow starvation and eventual demise so he could step into the seat of ultimate power.

On a rainy Thursday evening, Viktor cornered Enzo in the private underground parking garage beneath the estate.

“He’s getting stronger, Enzo,” Viktor hissed, stepping out from the shadows beside a sleek black Porsche. “Have you noticed? The boss is back to his old self. If we don’t act now, we lose our window entirely.”

Enzo stood tall, his face an impassive mask of granite. “The boss is running the syndicate better than ever, Viktor. Leave it alone.”

“Leave it alone?” Viktor laughed bitterly, stepping closer. “He brought a filthy cleaning maid into the master wing, and now she controls what goes into his mouth! How do we know she isn't playing a long game? How do we know she isn't waiting for the right moment to finish what the last attempt started?”

“She’s not,” Enzo said coldly. “I vetted her. She’s clean.”

“You’re getting soft, Enzo,” Viktor sneered, his eyes narrowing with a dangerous glint. “If you won't protect the family's future, I will. A king who trusts a kitchen maid is a king who deserves to fall.”

Enzo didn’t blink, but his hand subtly slid closer to the pistol concealed beneath his jacket. “Try anything inside these gates, Viktor, and you won’t make it out alive. Even you know that.”

Viktor stepped back into the shadows, a venomous smile twisting his lips. “We’ll see about that, old friend. We’ll see.”

Upstairs in the kitchen, completely unaware of the deadly conspiracy brewing in the parking garage, Norah was humming softly to herself as she chopped fresh rosemary for a hearty vegetable stew. She stirred a simmering iron pot, breathing in the rich, earthy aromas that filled the warm room.

She plated a fresh portion into a clean ceramic bowl, added a slice of warm sourdough bread, and placed it neatly on a silver tray.

“Ready for the boss’s dinner,” Norah murmured, picking up the tray and heading toward the private elevator.

She had no idea that tonight’s meal would become the ultimate battlefield for the survival of the Rossy empire.
