Chapter 3 - The Tables Turn

Derek froze, his foot halfway out of the row as the bailiff stepped smoothly into his path, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. My mother looked like she was about to suffer a full cardiac arrest, her hands clawing desperately at her chest as her grand, meticulously planned scheme unraveled completely before her eyes.
"Your Honor," I continued, stepping toward the judge's bench and placing the certified federal records neatly on the wood. "Not only did my mother and brother commit perjury under oath today by swearing I never served, but they have also orchestrated a malicious campaign of harassment, defamation, and financial extortion designed to steal the estate legally bequeathed to me by my grandfather."
Judge Sterling reviewed the documents silently, her expression growing darker with every page she turned. The federal seal, the signatures of the commanding officers, and the explicit details of Derek's dishonorable discharge and theft charges laid bare the absolute hypocrisy of the people standing across from me.
"Mrs. Vance," Judge Sterling said softly, though her voice carried the weight of an impending avalanche. "You swore under oath that your daughter had never served in the military, yet she has presented both physical combat evidence and federal service records that directly contradict your sworn testimony. Furthermore, your son stands accused in federal records of military theft. Would you like to revise your statement before I bind this transcript over to the State’s Attorney's office for felony perjury charges?"
Evelyn’s knees buckled slightly, and she had to grab onto Derek’s arm to keep from collapsing onto the carpet. All the arrogant bluster she had walked into the courtroom with had completely evaporated, leaving behind a terrified, cornered woman realizing she had played a high-stakes game and lost everything.
"I... I made a mistake," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking miserably, sounding pathetic and small. "We were confused... we thought..."
"You weren't confused, Mother. You were greedy," I said, turning to face her directly for the first time in three years. The years of emotional abuse, the belittling, the constant undermining of my service and sacrifices—it all rose up inside me, not as anger, but as a cold, crystalline sense of vindication. "You spent my entire life teaching me that love was conditional on obedience and money. But the army taught me something entirely different. It taught me how to stand my ground when the artillery shells are falling. And you brought capguns to a artillery war."
Judge Sterling closed the folder with a sharp, definitive slap. "This court will not tolerate perjury, fraudulent lawsuits, or the malicious abuse of the judicial system to harass a decorated combat veteran. Case dismissed with prejudice. Furthermore, based on the evidence of perjury and fraudulent filings presented today, I am ordering an immediate referral to the county prosecutor's office for formal criminal charges against both Evelyn Vance and Derek Vance."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom as the bailiff stepped closer to Derek, his handcuffs clicking softly against his tactical belt. My mother let out a loud, theatrical sob, collapsing back into the wooden bench as her grand crusade officially turned into a nightmare of her own making.
I picked up my briefcase, secured my navy blazer over my arm, and walked out of the courtroom doors into the bright afternoon sunlight. The air outside tasted sweeter, cleaner, and infinitely more alive than it had in years.
