Chapter 3 - City of Light and Liberation

The crisp Parisian air hit our faces as we stepped out of Charles de Gaulle Airport into a waiting private transfer. The city of light welcomed us with soft morning sunlight reflecting off classic Haussmann-style limestone buildings, charming cafes, and the unmistakable hum of vibrant European life.

I had arranged for us to stay at a boutique luxury hotel tucked away in the historic Marais district—far away from the tourist traps, complete with a wrought-iron balcony overlooking a quiet cobblestone courtyard. When we walked into our suite, complete with fresh white roses, French macarons waiting on a silver platter, and a handwritten welcome note in elegant script, Sandy burst into happy tears for entirely different reasons than she had two days ago.

"Mom, this isn't real. This has to be a dream," she breathed, spinning around the spacious room, running her fingers over the velvet upholstery.

"Pinch yourself," I laughed, unpacking our bags. "Because tonight, we are dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant overlooking the Seine, and tomorrow, we are shopping for whatever couture your heart desires."

For the next four days, we lived in a state of absolute, unapologetic freedom. We walked along the banks of the Seine, visited the Musée d'Orfée, climbed the spiral stairs of the Eiffel Tower as it twinkled against the midnight sky, and indulged in warm pain au chocolat at corner patisseries before the city fully woke up. Without the suffocating weight of family expectations, judgment, and emotional manipulation hanging over us, Sandy transformed. Her shoulders relaxed, her laugh became loud and unrestrained, and the spark in her eyes burned brighter than ever before.

On our third evening, sitting at a candlelit table outside overlooking the glowing river, Sandy reached across the white tablecloth and took my hand.

"Mom... thank you," she said softly, her voice steady and full of deep conviction. "I was so ready to just let them walk all over me. I thought I had to take it because they're family. But being here... seeing how you stood up to them and chose me... it changed everything for me. I never want to shrink myself for them again."

I squeezed her fingers tightly, my heart swelling with pride. "Family isn't defined by shared DNA or mandatory holiday gatherings, sweetheart. True family protects your peace, celebrates your victories, and loves you without conditions. Anyone who demands you dim your light so someone else can shine doesn't deserve a place in your life."

While we were drinking in the magic of Paris, back in Chicago, our absence was causing an absolute structural collapse within the Vance household. According to automated alerts from our home security system and unblocked emails from mutual acquaintances who couldn't resist gossiping, Brooke’s grand "stolen" birthday party had turned into an unmitigated disaster.

Unable to access my funds, and with the venue refusing to let them step foot inside without a valid, un-frozen payment method, Brooke had been forced to cancel Madison’s lavish party twenty-four hours before it was supposed to start. Madison had thrown a legendary, furniture-breaking tantrum that had neighbors calling the police, while Evelyn had attempted to corner my colleagues at my office building, only to be escorted off the premises by building security.

They had built an entire lifestyle on entitlement, exploitation, and the assumption that I would always absorb the blows to keep the peace. They had no idea what happened when a certified strategist decided to audit their entire existence and balance the ledger permanently.
