Chapter 4 - Queen of Sterling Tower

The private elevator opened directly into the sixty-fifth-floor penthouse of Sterling Tower, and the breath caught in my throat.

Floor-to-ceiling glass walls wrapped entirely around the grand living space, offering a breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic view of Central Park and the glittering spires of Manhattan. The interior was a masterpiece of modern minimalist design—polished white marble floors, cascading indoor water features, contemporary abstract art, and furniture crafted from rich Italian leather and brushed gold.

Fiona and Leo immediately let out joyful shrieks of delight, sprinting across the expansive living room to press their hands against the cool glass, watching tiny yellow taxicabs zip like ants far down below on Fifth Avenue.

Mrs. Gable, the dignified, silver-haired estate manager who had served Aunt Margaret for thirty years, stepped forward with a warm, respectful bow.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Vance," Mrs. Gable said smoothly, her eyes crinkling with genuine kindness. "Dinner for you and the children has been prepared in the private dining salon. Master Leo’s favorite chicken sliders and Miss Fiona’s requested strawberry tarts are waiting."

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," I smiled, feeling a surreal warmth bloom in my chest. "Please, call me Jessi."

For the next two weeks, my life transformed into a whirlwind of profound awakening. I wasn't hiding behind an ironing board or editing transcripts at 3:00 AM anymore. As the majority shareholder and controlling chair of Sterling Tower’s board of directors, I spent my mornings sitting in a massive mahogany boardroom chair, reviewing multi-million-dollar real estate acquisitions, signing off on urban green-space initiatives, and working alongside top-tier executives who listened intently every time I spoke.

I enrolled in high-level executive leadership seminars, hired a personal trainer, and rediscovered the sharp, creative mind that Luca had deliberately kept buried under years of domestic gaslighting.

My children thrived in their new environment. Fiona proudly showed off her watercolor paintings in her expansive sunlit bedroom, while Leo spent his afternoons exploring the secure, private rooftop botanical garden under the watchful eye of our personal estate security detail.

We didn't miss Luca. Not for a single second. He was simply a fading shadow from a lifetime ago, a bad chapter in a book I had already rewritten.

Until a rainy Tuesday afternoon in October, when my new life collided violently with my old past.

I was walking through the grand marble-pillowed lobby of Sterling Tower, flanked by Marcus and Ray, on my way to a high-level banking summit when a disheveled figure burst through the revolving glass doors.

Security moved instantly, but I held up a hand, stopping them in their tracks.

It was Luca.

He looked unrecognizable. His expensive navy suit was rumpled, his hair unwashed and matted with rain, and dark, hollow circles bruised the skin beneath his bloodshot eyes. He looked like a man who had been sleeping in his car for a month—because, as I later learned from legal briefs, he actually had.

"Jessi! Oh, thank God!" Luca cried out, stumbling past the velvet ropes of the security checkpoint before Marcus firmly grabbed him by the shoulders, pinning him a respectful ten feet away from me.

The sophisticated business executives and investors walking through the lobby stopped in their tracks, staring in stunned silence at the pathetic spectacle unfolding near the elevator banks.

Luca fell to his knees on the polished marble floor, ignoring the dampness, stretching his hands out toward me in utter desperation.

"Jessi, please... I’m begging you," Luca sobbed, his voice cracking with humiliation. "I lost everything. The firm liquidated my shares, my apartment lease was terminated for non-payment, and federal investigators are looking into the consulting accounts. I have nothing left. I'm ruined!"

I looked down at him. There was no anger left in my heart. There wasn't even pity. There was only the cold, clear realization of how small he had always been.

"You didn't lose everything, Luca," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the soaring marble lobby. "You just lost the person who was carrying you."

Luca looked up, his face twisted in desperate disbelief. "We have children, Jessi! We built a life together! Can't you show a little mercy? Just a small loan, just enough to get back on my feet—"

I turned to Marcus, my head held high, my posture straight and unyielding.

"Escort this trespasser off the property, Marcus," I instructed calmly. "And if he ever attempts to step foot inside Sterling Tower again, have local authorities issue a permanent restraining order for corporate harassment."

May you like

"Right away, Madam Chair," Marcus nodded.

As Luca was dragged backward across the gleaming marble floor, screaming my name in a frenzy of panic and regret, I didn't look back. I stepped gracefully into the private executive elevator, pressed the button for the sixty-fifth floor, and watched the brass doors slide shut, sealing me safely inside my glittering empire.
