Chapter 3 - The Secret Inbox and the Escape Route

At exactly 4:11 a.m., I sat cross-legged on the plush carpet of our master walk-in closet, shielding the glow of my laptop screen with a dark designer garment bag so the light wouldn't wake Grant.

At the very top of my hidden, encrypted ProtonMail inbox was a message I had received three weeks earlier.

A message I had reread almost every single night while Grant slept beside me, using it as my digital armor to survive the daily psychological torture of living in this house.

The subject line contained three life-changing words.

WELCOME TO CALDER TECHNOLOGIES.

I clicked open the email and stared at the official corporate offer letter.

Position: Senior Director of Global Communications.

Base Salary: $240,000 per annum.

Location: Headquarters – Grand Cayman / Remote Hybrid.

Start Date: January 15.

For the first time in six years, my future didn't look like an endless, degrading list of chores, demands, insults, and chores assigned by ungrateful tyrants.

I wasn't just Grant Mercer’s invisible, exhausted trophy wife.

I wasn't just Vivian’s convenient, domestic punching bag.

I was Claire Sterling again.

And I was finally taking my life, my dignity, and my son back from the jaws of a toxic dynasty.

I opened a separate browser tab and navigated to my airline booking history. Four days earlier, before Noah had spiked his sudden fever, anticipating that a breaking point with Vivian and Grant was fast approaching, I had silently purchased two first-class electronic flight tickets using my independent business savings account that Grant couldn't touch.

Route: Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) to Providenciales International (PLS).

Destination: Turks & Caicos.

Departure Time: Today, 7:05 a.m.

Flight Number: American Airlines Flight 2411 connecting through Miami.

Passenger Manifest:

Claire Mercer

Noah Mercer

I looked at the digital boarding passes glowing brightly on my laptop screen.

Downstairs, the kitchen ovens remained ice cold, untouched, and completely empty.

In just under three hours, Vivian Mercer was going to march down those grand stairs expecting to find twenty-five elite socialites greeted by the smell of artisanal pastries, sizzling smoked salmon Benedict, and a beaming, subservient daughter-in-law ready to kiss her feet.

Instead, she would find dead silence.

Cold counters.

An empty house.

And a laminated goodbye note waiting on the kitchen island.

I closed my laptop lid with a soft snap, slid it securely into my leather backpack alongside our passports, cash reserves, and the gray legal folder. I zipped up my medium gray hardshell suitcase, which I had packed completely over the last week while Grant was away on a fake "business trip" to Las Vegas—trips where I frequently suspected he was maintaining a separate apartment or mistress, though I no longer cared enough to investigate.

I stood up, adjusting the straps of my backpack, ready to slip out of the closet and wake Noah gently so we could dress quietly in the dark.

But before my foot could cross the threshold of the walk-in closet, the heavy luxury mattress in the bedroom creaked loudly.

Then came a groggy, irritated rustle of sheets.

And finally, my husband's deep, annoyed voice cut through the dark bedroom.

"Claire?"

My hand tightened instantly around the heavy leather handle of my suitcase, my knuckles turning stark white.

"What the hell are you doing stomping around in the closet at four in the morning? People are trying to sleep."

May you like

I froze, swallowed the lump in my throat, and stepped slowly out of the dark walk-in closet into the dim bedroom light, looking directly at the man I had wasted six years of my life trying to please.

"Why are you packing a suitcase?" Grant demanded, propping himself up on one elbow, his eyes narrowing with sudden, confused suspicion.
