Chapter 3 - The Early Morning Phone Call

That night was the longest, darkest night of my life. After putting three-year-old twins Lily and Chloe to sleep with bowls of plain oatmeal and watered-down milk, I sat at our small kitchen table in the dark, staring at the stack of unpaid medical bills sitting beside our eviction warning notice. Without that job, we wouldn't survive the week. I had no savings, no family, and no backup plan. I cried until my chest ached, mourning a life that had already been stripped of my beloved husband and was now being stripped of my dignity and my livelihood.
I finally drifted into a fitful, dream-tormented sleep around 4:00 AM.
Just a few hours later, at exactly 7:12 AM, my cell phone vibrated violently on the nightstand. I jolted awake, my heart racing with immediate dread. It was Marcus, one of the senior security guards at the hotel and one of the few people on staff who had actually believed in my character. We had shared many late-night coffee breaks in the breakroom where I vented about my husband's final months, and he knew how desperately I needed that job.
I swiped the screen and brought the phone to my ear. "Marcus? Please tell me this isn't about my final paycheck. I already know I'm fired."
"Rachel, listen to me very carefully," Marcus whispered, his voice tense, urgent, and vibrating with an intensity that immediately set my nerves on edge. "You need to get dressed right now and come back down to the hotel."
I sat straight up in bed, frustration bleeding into my fear. "Marcus, are you out of your mind? They fired me yesterday! I am legally barred from stepping foot on the property, and even if I wasn't, why would I walk back into the place that just threw me under the bus?"
"I know, I know," Marcus hurried, cutting me off. "Just hear me out. I'm working the early morning shift in the security control room. After you left yesterday, I couldn't let it go. Something about how smug that woman acted didn't sit right with my gut. So I stayed late last night. I pulled the raw, unedited master security files from Suite 402."
My stomach tightened into a painful knot. "And what did you find? Did they search my apartment while I was gone?"
"No," Marcus said, a strange, breathless pause hanging in the air between us. "You’re not going to believe what that woman left behind for you."
"Marcus, stop playing games. What are you talking about?"

"Just get in your car and drive here. Come through the loading dock employee entrance on 4th Street. I'll buzz you in through the back stairwell before management even arrives for the day. You need to see this with your own eyes, Rachel. Trust me."
Before I could argue further, the line went dead. I stared at the phone screen, my mind racing through a thousand terrifying possibilities. Had she planted something else in my locker? Had she left a note? With shaking hands, I pulled on a pair of jeans, threw on my heavy winter coat, and kissed my sleeping daughters on their foreheads. Whatever was waiting for me at that hotel, my life was already ruined—so I had nothing left to lose.
