Chapter 3 - The Corporate Fortress

Six months after surviving the brutal crucibles of Task Force Vanguard, Second Lieutenant Evelyn Carter no longer existed on paper. To the rest of the United States military, I was a ghost—assigned to a phantom administrative unit with a classified deployment status. In reality, I was operating as a senior tactical intelligence analyst and undercover infiltration specialist for the nation’s most secretive shadow command.
My first major operational assignment brought me back into a world I thought I had left far behind: the glittering, cutthroat corporate elite of Denver, Colorado.
Intelligence had flagged a massive, multi-million-dollar transnational syndicate operating under the legal umbrella of Apex Global Enterprises—a massive conglomerate specializing in high-tech defense logistics, commercial real estate development, and private security contracting. Beneath its pristine, philanthropic public image, Apex Global was serving as a financial laundering and technology-smuggling front for hostile foreign intelligence agencies.
And the chief financial officer overseeing Apex Global’s domestic expansion division was none other than my father, Richard Carter.
When Task Force Vanguard’s intelligence dossier landed on my desk, detailing my father’s rise to corporate prominence alongside his multi-million-dollar embezzlement and illicit overseas arms-brokering schemes, a cold, heavy calm washed over me. For years, my father had lorded his corporate success, his wealth, and his social standing over everyone around him, treating ethics and family loyalty as disposable commodities. He had built his entire empire on deceit, arrogance, and the exploitation of others—including casting me out of the family narrative to protect his pristine social standing.
"Lieutenant Carter," Captain Marcus Vance—now my primary operational partner—said, stepping into my tactical planning cell at our secure forward safehouse just outside Denver. "We have eyes on the target. Apex Global is hosting its annual elite charity gala and investor summit this Friday night at the Grand Meridian Ballroom in downtown Denver. It’s the exact same venue where your family threw that lavish celebration for your brother six months ago."
I stared at the architectural blueprints of the ballroom displayed on my secure tactical tablet. A bitter, ironic smile touched my lips. "History loves a dramatic script, Captain."
"General Vance has authorized a direct, high-risk intelligence extraction," Marcus continued, his tone all business. "Apex Global is finalizing a multi-billion-dollar defense contract acquisition that will give them direct back-door access to classified Pentagon logistics networks. We need to infiltrate the gala, bypass their encrypted mainframe servers in the executive penthouse, secure the master cryptographic ledger implicating your father and his associates, and exfiltrate without leaving a single digital or physical footprint."
"Consider it done," I replied smoothly, my tactical mind locking into position.
On Friday evening, the Grand Meridian Ballroom was blindingly opulent. Crystal chandeliers cascaded light over hundreds of Denver’s wealthiest elites, high-ranking politicians, and corporate titans dressed in exquisite designer tuxedos and glittering evening gowns. Live classical music drifted through the air, accompanied by the clinking of expensive champagne flutes.
I didn't arrive in tactical gear or an undercover waitress uniform. Working alongside Task Force Vanguard’s deep-cover logistics network, I secured a formal invitation under a secure diplomatic alias, stepping into the grand ballroom wearing a breathtaking, custom-tailored emerald-green backless evening gown that commanded immediate attention. My dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, and a secure, encrypted communications earpiece sat invisibly nestled inside my left ear canal.
Scanning the crowded room, I easily spotted my family within minutes.
They sat at the VIP head table near the stage. My father looked prosperous and self-satisfied, laughing heartily as he shook hands with local politicians and prominent investors. My mother beamed beside him, draped in expensive diamonds, basking in the reflected glow of high-society adoration. Logan, now sporting an executive vice president title he hadn't earned, stood nearby, holding court with a group of sycophants while casually dropping exaggerated stories about his corporate brilliance.
They looked happy, wealthy, and entirely untouchable.
Keeping my posture immaculate, I glided past them, slipping unnoticed through a set of heavy, secure double doors leading to the private executive elevators at the back of the facility.
"Approaching the executive floor override," I murmured softly into my comms link as I bypassed a biometric security scanner using a specialized Vanguard data-decryption keycard.
"Copy that, Vanguard Actual," Marcus’s voice crackled back from the surveillance van parked three blocks away. "You have active perimeter guards on the penthouse level. Move fast and stay dark."
The elevator doors slid open silently on the top floor of the Apex Global tower. Two private security guards dressed in sharp tactical suits stepped into the hallway, their hands resting suspiciously close to concealed sidearms.
Before either of them could utter a warning, I closed the distance with terrifying speed. Utilizing the close-quarters combat techniques hammered into me during Vanguard selection, I swept the first guard’s legs out from under him, neutralized his partner with a swift, precise palm strike to the chest, and zip-tied both of them before they even hit the plush carpet.
"Corridor clear," I reported calmly, adjusting the neckline of my evening gown as if I had just strolled out of a powder room.
I stepped into the executive mainframe suite, slid the master cryptographic drive into the primary terminal, and watched as lines of cascading green code downloaded gigabytes of illegal financial transfers, offshore bank accounts, and treasonous defense logistics documents straight to Vanguard servers.
Just as the download hit one hundred percent, the heavy oak doors of the penthouse office swung wide open.
My father strode into the room, holding a crystal tumbler of scotch, laughing as he muttered into his phone. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw me standing beside the glowing mainframe terminal, casually pulling the encryption drive from the port.

The color instantly drained from his face. His jaw went slack, and the glass of scotch slipped from his fingers, shattering loudly against the marble floor.
"E-Evelyn?" he stammered, his voice dropping into a horrified whisper as his eyes darted from the download screen back to my composed, freezing stare. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get up here?"
