Chapter 3 - The Web Unravels

Ethan saw the realization dawn in my eyes, and his frantic expression shifted into something darker, more desperate. He stepped closer, lowering his voice into a soothing, patronizing tone that made my blood run cold.

"Sarah, please. Let's go downstairs. You're overtired, you're not thinking clearly, and you're letting this girl poison your mind," Ethan pleaded, reaching out to touch my arm.

I flinched away from him as if he carried a plague. "Don't touch me. Don't you dare touch me."

"Mr. Miller, I advise you to stay back," Grace said calmly, her hand slipping into the pocket of her cardigan. I didn't miss the subtle click of her phone locking—she had saved the file to a secure cloud folder, ensuring that even if they smashed the device to pieces, the evidence was already out of their reach.

Amanda’s face twisted into an ugly, mask-like snarl. The weeping act vanished in an instant. "You ungrateful little parasite," she hissed at Grace, taking a menacing step forward. "I pay your wages! I brought you into this house! You were supposed to be upstairs folding laundry while we handled the nursery schedule! You ruined everything!"

"Mom, shut up!" Ethan yelled, finally losing his temper as his mother inadvertently confessed to the conspiracy in front of a witness.

"No, I won't shut up!" Amanda screamed, turning her fury onto her own son. "Look at her! She’s a weak, emotional disaster! If we don't fix this now, she’s going to take the baby and leave, and we'll never see our grandchild again! You agreed it was the only way to ensure stability!"

The bathroom fell into a tomb-like silence.

Ethan closed his eyes, his shoulders slumping in defeat. The lie was dead. The conspiracy was laid bare on the cold bathroom tiles, confessed in a fit of hysterical vanity by the woman who thought she was untouchable.

"You planned this," I whispered, the words tearing my throat apart. "You and your mother planned to frame me for child neglect."

Ethan opened his eyes, looking at me not with love, but with cold, calculating detachment. "We didn't want to hurt you, Sarah. But you're unstable. You cry over nothing, you don't sleep, you're unfit to raise an heir to this family alone. Mom just wanted to establish a record so the courts could grant us primary custody while you got the psychiatric help you need. It was for your own good."

"For my own good," I repeated, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping my lips. "You set my newborn daughter up as bait in a drowning hazard just to build a legal case against me?"

"The water was only three inches deep!" Ethan shouted back, his mask completely slipping. "Nothing was going to happen to her! Mom was standing right around the corner ready to step in if Grace hadn't burst in like a bull in a china shop!"

"Except Grace did walk in," a cool, steady voice interrupted.

We all turned to look at Grace. She stood tall, her soaked sleeves clinging to her arms, looking every bit like an anchor in a raging storm. She raised her phone, the screen still illuminated. "And your wife’s cloud backup is currently syncing copies to my personal attorney and local emergency services. The timestamped video, the audio of your coordination, and Mrs. Miller's admission are already logged off-site."

Amanda gasped, lunging forward like a cornered animal to snatch the phone, but Grace stepped swiftly aside, sending Amanda stumbling against the edge of the porcelain sink with a sharp cry of pain.

"You're ruined," Ethan whispered, staring at Grace in absolute horror. "You have no idea what my family can do to you. We will bury you in lawsuits. We will destroy your life."

"Your family is about to experience something much worse than lawsuits," I said, turning my back on my husband for the very first time.

I adjusted the towel around my sleeping daughter, turned on my heel, and walked out of the bathroom, leaving Ethan and his mother trapped in the wreckage of their own malice.
