Chapter 3

The credential implicated Julian, but Damien refused to act on a single digital record. Security codes could be stolen, copied or deliberately planted. He needed evidence that would survive beyond the walls of his organization.

He also needed the traitor to believe the coma remained convincing.

Marco arranged different private updates for each of the four men who knew the waterfront route. Elias was told Damien had suffered permanent memory damage. Tomas heard that his right side was paralyzed. Marco allowed the organization to believe recovery remained unlikely.

Julian received one specific detail: Damien would be transferred at four the following morning to a secure rehabilitation facility outside Chicago.

No transfer existed.

If anyone moved against that route, Damien would know which version escaped.

Nora remained assigned to Room 407 under Kessler’s supervision. Damien disliked placing her back inside the trap, but she refused to disappear before the evidence was complete.

“If I leave now, Kessler changes the record and says I stole the syringe,” she told him.

“I can protect you.”

“You can hide me. That is not the same thing.”

The distinction irritated Damien because it was true.

Nora documented every medication, vital sign and visitor according to hospital policy. She sent duplicate copies through an independent reporting channel Marco could not access or alter. Her decisions protected Damien, but they also prevented him from controlling the evidence entirely.

“You don’t trust me,” he observed after Eli fell asleep in a chair near the window.

“I met you last night.”

“Most people trust me much sooner.”

“Most people are frightened of disappointing you.”

Damien glanced toward the sleeping child. “You are frightened.”

“Yes. I’m still checking your medication.”

Shortly before midnight, Nora discovered that Kessler had accessed Rosa’s billing account and placed an administrative hold on her scheduled treatment. The message attached to the account cited unresolved employee-conduct concerns.

He was using her aunt’s health to force compliance.

Nora’s first reaction was not anger. Her face simply emptied.

Damien noticed.

“What happened?”

She showed him the notice.

“I will pay it,” he said.

“No.”

“You protected my life.”

“I will not trade one debt for another.”

“It would not be a debt.”

“You do not know how to give anything without owning the result.”

The words should have offended him. Instead, they reached the same place Eli’s hand had touched.

“What do you want?” Damien asked.

“I want the hold documented. I want an independent billing review, and I want my aunt’s treatment protected from retaliation. Not because you frightened someone into making an exception.”

Damien instructed Marco to contact outside counsel and the hospital’s independent board members. The review restored Rosa’s appointment before dawn and preserved Kessler’s interference as additional evidence.

At 2:11 a.m., Nora’s phone received a photograph.

Eli lay asleep beneath a hospital blanket in the staff room where Marco’s people had moved him. The photograph had been taken from inside the room.

A message appeared beneath it.

Bring the original syringe to Kessler’s office. Come alone. If Vale wakes, your son doesn’t leave this floor.

Nora’s hand began shaking.

Damien sat upright despite the pain across his chest. “Show me.”

She handed him the phone.

Marco immediately called the guard assigned to Eli. No one answered.

The service cameras outside the staff room had gone dark three minutes earlier.

Nora moved toward the door.

Damien caught her arm. “You are not going alone.”

“That message is about my son.”

“It is designed to make you carry the evidence to them.”

“I know.”

“Then let Marco move first.”

Nora looked at the monitor, the bandages and the man who still struggled to stand without reopening his wounds.

“You built this trap for the person who betrayed you,” she said. “My son is inside it now.”

The accusation landed because Damien could not deny it.

He released her arm. “Then we end it before anyone else gets caught.”

Marco obtained a duplicate evidence container while Nora kept the original syringe secured. A hospital security team loyal to Damien traced Kessler’s badge to an administrative suite near the service elevator.

At 3:42 a.m., armed vehicles appeared along the false transfer route.

At 3:47, Kessler entered Room 407 carrying a second syringe.

Julian walked behind him.

The traitor had finally shown his face.
