Chapter 4 - The Midnight Vault

Midnight struck with the heavy, solemn chime of the grandfather clock in the main foyer.
Up in the master suite, Arthur Vance let out a triumphant laugh, slamming his hand onto the keyboard of the terminal. "Got it! The biometric retinal verification just accepted the synthetic signature! The primary vault doors in the sub-basement are cycling open right now!"
Miles Carrow stepped forward, his eyes glued to the security monitor mounted on the wall. On the screen, the massive, six-inch-thick steel door of the underground vault slowly swung inward, revealing rows of polished mahogany safety deposit boxes, original property deeds, and the digital ledger drives containing every illegal asset transfer Miles had executed over the past decade.
"Magnificent," Miles breathed, a manic grin spreading across his face. "After all these years... it’s all mine. Every single dollar, every single property, every single piece of leverage."
"Let's go down and secure the physical drives," Arthur said, packing his laptop into its leather case. "Once we have the master keys, we can initiate the final asset sweep and leave this country before dawn."
Miles grabbed his coat from the back of the chair, his heart racing with intoxicating greed. He marched down the winding staircase, his armed guards trailing behind him—though he noticed with a brief pang of annoyance that the two guards stationed by the security office weren't answering their radios.
"Check the security post," Miles snapped as they reached the ground floor corridor leading to the sub-basement stairs.
One of the guards pushed open the door to the security monitoring room, only to gasp and collapse backward, completely unconscious from the heavy sedative Rebecca had mixed into their midnight coffee.
"What the—" Miles cursed, drawing his pistol. "Someone's here. Move! Move!"
They rushed down the stone steps into the sub-basement, their flashlights cutting erratic beams through the damp air. As they reached the open door of the vault, Miles stopped dead in his tracks.
Standing inside the illuminated vault, leaning casually against a stack of titanium lockboxes, was Nathan Vale.
He was wearing a fresh white dress shirt, his hair combed back, his posture straight and commanding. In his hand, he held a crystal tumbler filled with ice water, taking a slow, deliberate sip as he watched Miles approach.
Miles stared in utter disbelief, his pistol trembling in his hand. "You... you were chained to the wall! How are you out? Where are the guards?"
"Your men are currently taking a very long, very peaceful nap upstairs, Miles," Nathan said calmly, his voice smooth and steady. He set the glass down on a mahogany pedestal with a sharp, echoing clink.
Miles raised his pistol, his face contorting with blind panic and rage. "You think you're clever, don't you? You think a little water and a change of shirt changes anything? I have the vault! I have the ledgers! You're ruined, Nate! You lost everything!"
"Did I?" Nathan asked softly.
Before Miles could pull the trigger, the heavy steel security door behind him suddenly slammed shut with a thunderous, mechanical crash. The heavy locking bolts slid into place with a series of loud, automated clicks, sealing the thick steel door hermetically from the outside.
Miles spun around, throwing his weight against the vault door and hammering his fists against the metal. "Open this door! Arthur! Get on the terminal! Open this door right now!"
Arthur Vance frantically spun toward the wall control panel beside the vault, his fingers flying across the buttons. But the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson, displaying a single word in bold capital letters: LOCKED - FEDERAL OVERRIDE.
"It's no use," Arthur whispered, turning around with a face as white as paper. "The mainframe... the mainframe isn't under our control anymore. The encryption keys were just reset from an external source."
Nathan walked slowly toward the glass partition of the vault, looking out at his former lieutenant with an expression of profound, chilling pity.
"You spent twenty-two years studying me, Miles," Nathan said quietly, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "You memorized my habits, my routines, my weaknesses. But you forgot the most important rule of the empire I built."
Miles pressed his face against the steel bars of the inner gate, his eyes wild with terror. "What rule?"
"A true king never leaves his vault unprotected," Nathan smiled. "And he never trusts a traitor with the master keys."
At that exact second, the heavy oak doors at the top of the sub-basement stairs burst open.
Brilliant white lights flooded the stairwell, accompanied by the heavy, synchronized thud of combat boots. A dozen federal agents in tactical gear, led by a special agent in charge of the Department of Justice Financial Crimes Task Force, poured down the stairs with weapons drawn.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" the lead agent roared, his voice bouncing off the stone walls.

Miles dropped his pistol to the floor, his knees buckling beneath him as he slid down against the steel door of the vault, staring up in absolute horror as the heavy steel cuffs were snapped around his wrists.
The nightmare was over. And the empire had reclaimed its throne.
