Chapter 5 - Pancakes, Payouts, and New Beginnings

Three days later, the financial headlines across Seattle were buzzing with shock. Henderson Vector Technologies had not only avoided a multi-million-dollar production disaster, but they had also announced a landmark strategic partnership and minority acquisition of a small, four-person maintenance shop called Mercer Plant Services.
Wall Street analysts were baffled. Tech blogs speculated wildly about what secret technology Henderson Vector was trying to acquire from a tiny local contractor.
None of them guessed the truth.
On a bright, crisp Tuesday morning, a sleek black town car pulled up outside a modest, well-kept suburban home in West Seattle. The driver stepped out and walked up the front steps, carrying a heavy cardboard box from Seattle's finest bakery, accompanied by a tall, insulated cup of artisanal hot chocolate and a custom chocolate milkshake.
Inside the house, Daniel Mercer was standing at the kitchen counter flipping buttermilk pancakes, while a ten-year-old boy with messy brown hair and bright hazel eyes sat at the table doing homework.
"Dad," the boy said, pointing at a math worksheet. "Are you sure number seven isn't seventy-four? I checked it again."
Daniel laughed, flipping a golden pancake onto a plate. "Trust me, buddy. I had a very expensive corporate consultant help me double-check the math last weekend. When you carry the one correctly, the numbers always work out."
A soft knock sounded at the front door.
Daniel walked over and opened it. Standing on the porch, wearing a cashmere trench coat instead of a gala gown, was Victoria Henderson. She didn't look like an untouchable corporate monolith. She looked relaxed, her hair catching the morning sunlight, holding a small sketchbook she had bought for a ten-year-old math whiz.
"Good morning, Mercer Plant Services," Victoria said with a warm, easy smile. "I believe I promised a delivery. Is the lead technician in?"

Daniel smiled back, stepping aside to let her into the warm, fragrant kitchen. "He's busy with his homework, but I think he can spare a few minutes for a CEO."
As the smell of maple syrup and fresh coffee filled the house, Victoria realized that for the first time in her life, she hadn't found someone who wanted something from her. She had found someone who had everything she ever secretly wanted. And as she sat down at the wooden kitchen table to share breakfast, she knew her empire—and her life—would never be the same again.
