Chapter 3 - The Rooftop Chase and the Bulletproof Resolve

Richard Vance’s face turned the color of ash. He stared at Declan—really looked at him—and for the first time, he saw past the faded flannel shirt and the duct-taped work boot. He saw the cold, unyielding gaze of a man who had stared down warlords and cartels without blinking.

"Kill him!" Vance screamed at his remaining guard, who was slowly picking himself up near the lockers.

The guard scrambled for his dropped weapon, but Declan was faster. With a single calculated snap of his wrist, he fired a short burst into the concrete floor two inches from the guard's boots. The ricochet sent a shower of sparks flying and froze the man in his tracks.

"Drop the iron, or the next one goes through your knee," Declan ordered calmly.

The guard dropped his weapon immediately, raising his hands in surrender.

Vance backed away slowly toward the open service elevator, his eyes wide with panic. "You're making a massive mistake, Shaw! You think a couple of grand a week from Hartwell Aryan is worth your life? I can give you a million dollars right now! Two million!"

"Keep your money," Declan said coldly. "And keep your hands where I can see them."

"Declan, look out!" Camille suddenly cried out.

From the shadows behind the freight elevator, a rogue contractor—the second gunman Declan had knocked out earlier—had regained consciousness. He lunged forward with a heavy iron pipe, aiming a blind, vicious swing directly at Declan’s head.

Reacting purely on instinct, Declan shoved Camille safely behind a concrete pillar, but the heavy iron pipe caught him squarely across the left shoulder with a sickening crunch. Declan grunted, stumbling half a step, before spinning around and delivering a devastating roundhouse kick that sent the attacker flying backward into a stack of empty pallets.

Vance took advantage of the brief distraction, diving into the elevator car and slamming the emergency close button. The heavy steel doors groaned shut just as Declan lunged forward, his fingers scraping the metal edge as the car began its rapid ascent toward the upper floors.

Declan exhaled slowly, rolling his bruised shoulder. He turned back to Camille, his eyes softening immediately as he knelt down to check on her.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice returning to its gentle, grounding cadence.

Camille shook her head, tears shimmering in her eyes as she stared at the man who had just risked his life to save hers. "No. I'm... I'm not hurt at all. But you—your shoulder! He hit you hard."

"It's nothing. Adrenaline does wonders," Declan smiled faintly, offering her his hand again. "Can you walk now?"

"With your help, yes," she whispered, taking his hand.

"We need to get to the roof," Declan said, checking the magazine of the confiscated weapon before slinging it securely over his shoulder. "Vance is heading up to the executive comms room to wipe the server backups. If he deletes those files digitally, your hard copies are our only leverage left."

"Then let's move," Camille said, her voice hardening with newfound resolve. She wasn't just a corporate heiress anymore; she was a survivor.

They took the concrete service stairs two at a time, Declan supporting Camille’s weight with practiced ease despite his own injury. By the time they reached the heavy steel fire door leading to the roof helipad, the storm outside was raging at its absolute peak, howling wind and sheets of freezing rain across the open platform.

And waiting for them near the edge of the helipad, flanked by two more corporate thugs holding tablet computers connected to the building's main satellite link, stood Richard Vance.

In Vance's hand was a detonator-style trigger linked to a remote data wipe system, and beside him sat a heavy industrial winch control box overlooking the four-hundred-foot drop down to the street below.

"End of the line, sweetheart!" Vance yelled over the roaring wind, his hair whipping wildly around his face. "Hand over the briefcase, or I push the master delete button and sink Hartwell Aryan into total bankruptcy right now!"
