Chapter 2 - The Envelope That Stopped the Room

The heavy manila envelope sat on the ruined table, a stark, beige blot against the polished mahogany and glittering glass shards. For three seconds, nobody moved. The string quartet had long since abandoned their instruments, standing paralyzed near the stage like statues in a museum of catastrophe.
Adrian slowly bent down, his hands trembling slightly as he picked up the envelope. His eyes darted from the red government seal stamped across the flap up to my face. The anger he had felt toward Vanessa a moment ago had now transformed into a deep, chilling dread. He knew me; he knew I never did anything without a definitive, undeniable reason.
“What is this, Maya?” Adrian asked, his voice barely above a whisper, though the acoustic silence of the hall made every word audible to the front rows of stunned guests.
“Open it,” I replied simply, crossing my arms over my simple beige dress. I didn't flinch, nor did I look away.
Vanessa finally managed to push herself out of her bridesmaids' grip, her hair slightly disheveled, her immaculate makeup smeared with a tear of pure, unadulterated fury. She stumbled toward Adrian, her voice screeching like rusted metal.
“Don't you dare open that, Adrian!” Vanessa shrieked, pointing a shaking, diamond-ringed finger straight at my face. “She’s insane! She just destroyed our wedding centerpiece out of bitter, pathetic jealousy! Have security drag her out of here right now and throw her in a holding cell! I want her arrested for vandalism!”
Two burly men in black suits—private security guards hired for the evening—finally pushed their way through the paralyzed crowd, stepping onto the glass-strewn floor and moving quickly in my direction.
“Touch me, and you’ll be sharing a cell with your employer before midnight,” I said, not even looking at the guards, fixing my eyes entirely on Adrian.
Adrian held up a single hand, freezing the security guards in their tracks. He didn't care about the broken glass, the ruined reception, or the three hundred staring guests. His gut was telling him that the foundation of his entire multi-million-dollar empire—and his brand-new marriage—was sitting inside that paper folder.
With shaking fingers, Adrian broke the red wax seal, pulled out a thick stack of heavy legal documents, and began to read.
The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. His knees buckled slightly, forcing him to catch himself by pressing both hands flat against the sticky table. His eyes scanned the dense legal text, darting back and forth across columns of corporate shell company registries, wire transfer logs, and forensic accounting audits.
“No,” Adrian breathed, shaking his head in absolute denial. “No, this... this has to be a mistake. This isn't real.”
“Oh, it’s very real, Adrian,” I said softly.
Vanessa’s expression shifted from murderous rage to genuine panic. She snatched the top paper from Adrian’s hand, her eyes scanning the lines. As comprehension hit her, she went completely rigid. The document was a comprehensive federal subpoena and forensic asset-seizure notice detailing how Mercer Enterprises—the very shipping and logistics conglomerate Adrian’s family had spent decades building—had been systematically hollowed out from the inside over the past twenty-four months.
And the primary beneficiary of the embezzled funds wasn't some anonymous corporate raider. It was a boutique offshore investment firm registered entirely under the name of Vanessa Vance Holdings LLC.
“This is a forgery! A malicious, fabricated lie!” Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking hysterically as she crumpled the paper in her fist. She turned desperately to the crowd, forcing a manic, frantic smile. “Everyone, please! Ignore this deranged woman! She’s a nobody, a bitter stalker who has been obsessed with my husband for years! Security, get her out of my sight!”
“The federal prosecutor’s office in Bern doesn't issue forged documents, Vanessa,” a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the back of the ballroom.
The crowd parted as a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored charcoal suit walked purposefully through the entrance, flanked by two local magistrates and a pair of uniformed federal police officers. It was Julian Vance, Adrian’s uncle and the longtime chief legal counsel of the Mercer family board—a man who had spent forty years protecting the family name and who despised Vanessa with a quiet, burning intensity.
Julian stopped right beside Adrian, looking down at the ruined champagne tower before locking his piercing gaze onto his newlywed niece-in-law.
“The audit was finalized this morning, Vanessa,” Julian said calmly, his voice cutting through the hall like a razor blade. “Every euro you drained from Adrian’s personal accounts to fund your lavish lifestyle, your designer gowns, and your family's failing real estate ventures has been tracked, tagged, and frozen by the Swiss financial crimes unit.”

Adrian slowly turned his head to look at his new wife, the horror in his eyes turning into a cold, lethal fury. “You... you used my accounts? You stole from the company?”
Vanessa stopped screaming. She realized, in that exact second, that the fairy tale was completely, irreversibly dead.
