Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession and the Trap

The digital clock on the nightstand glowed a harsh 2:14 AM. The estate was dead silent, save for the distant, rhythmic hum of the HVAC system and the muffled crunch of security boots crunching on the gravel outside. Inside the dimly lit medical suite on the east wing, Callum Draven lay motionless beneath a white duvet, his chest rising and falling in a steady, rhythmic cadence. Dr. Vance had left a junior nurse on night watch before retiring to his quarters, trusting the heavy biometric locks to keep the room secure.

A shadow detached itself from the hallway darkness, moving with unnatural quiet toward the heavy oak door of the medical suite. The biometric scanner flickered green—not through a forced hack, but through the authorized master fingerprint of someone holding executive clearance.

The door clicked open. A figure slipped inside, clad in dark clothing, holding a small, sterile syringe filled with a colorless, fast-acting potassium solution designed to induce immediate cardiac arrest.

The intruder stepped up to the side of the bed, raising the syringe toward the intravenous line.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," a deep, cold voice resonated from the shadows near the window.

The intruder spun around in blind panic, dropping the syringe as the overhead lights snapped on with blinding intensity. Standing near the doorway, blocking the only exit, was Julian Marsh. And right beside him, holding a heavy brass candlestick like a makeshift club with fierce determination, was twelve-year-old Jonah.

"Marcus," Julian spat out the name like a bitter ash, stepping forward into the light. "Or should I say, the architect of your own brother's murder?"

Marcus Draven backed up against the heart monitor, his face completely drained of color, his expensive designer shirt soaked in nervous sweat. "Julian—wait! You don't understand! Callum was ruining everything! His reckless green-energy initiatives were going to bankrupt the family holdings within a year! I had to take control!"

"You didn't just take control, Marcus," a strong, gravelly voice echoed from the bed.

Marcus froze. His eyes bulged in pure terror as the man on the bed slowly sat up, pulling the oxygen cannula from his nose. Callum Draven’s steel-gray eyes were wide, clear, and burning with a cold, unforgiving fury. He wasn't heavily sedated at all; the medical suite had been a staged theater designed to draw the rat out of its hole.

"Callum—you're... you're supposed to be..." Marcus stammered, stumbling backward until his legs hit the edge of the mattress.

"Dead? Buried six feet deep where no one would ever find me?" Callum finished for him, his voice shaking with suppressed rage. "You hired those thugs, Marcus. You cleared the security logs, and you even had Elena draft the emergency transfer papers before my body was cold. And the worst part of it all? You left me to suffocate in the dark while you slept in my house."

Marcus lunged desperately toward the open window, hoping to make a break for the gardens, but before his foot could clear the sill, two tactical operatives burst through the adjoining door, tackling him hard to the polished floor and clicking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

As Marcus was dragged away, screaming curses and desperate denials into the empty hallway, the heavy silence of the room returned.

Callum slowly swung his legs over the side of the bed, ignoring the lingering ache in his bruised muscles. He looked across the room, past Julian, straight down at the twelve-year-old boy standing bravely in the center of the floor.
