Chapter 4 - The Underground Ambush and the Brother’s Betrayal

The elevator shuddered to a halt, the digital display flashing a stark, glowing B2.

The doors slid open with a soft metallic chime, revealing the cavernous, dimly lit expanse of the Etor Hotel’s subterranean parking garage. Rows of luxury sedans, armored SUVs, and classic collector cars stretched out into the shadows beneath flickering fluorescent lights.

Valerio stepped out first, his 1911 pistol raised and scanning every dark pillar and shadowy corner. Ignatio flanked his left side, weapon drawn and eyes sharp.

Danica stayed close behind Valerio, her hand tightly gripping the expensive fabric of his jacket sleeve. Her silver heels clicked sharply against the concrete, the sound magnified in the hollow, underground garage.

“The bulletproof Maybach is parked in Sector C, row four,” Valerio murmured, his voice deadpan and lethal. “If Veto has any sense, he’s already blocked the main exit ramps.”

“He knows we’re coming down here, Boss,” Ignatio warned, keeping his weapon leveled at a dark SUV fifty yards away. “The moment that elevator hit B2, their comms would have updated.”

As if on cue, the screech of squealing tires echoed off the concrete walls.

From behind a row of concrete pillars, two black Escalades roared to life, their high-beam headlights blindingly flashing on as they accelerated directly toward Valerio’s position. Men leaning out of the passenger windows raised submachine guns, opening fire with a deafening rattle that shattered windshields across the garage.

“Get down!” Valerio shouted.

He grabbed Danica by the waist, throwing her behind the thick, reinforced engine block of a parked vintage Rolls-Royce just as a hail of bullets chewed up the metal bodywork above them.

Ignatio dropped to one knee behind a concrete structural pillar, returning fire with lethal precision. The distinctive crack of his sidearm echoed through the garage, punctuated by the shattering of glass and the shouts of the Felicity hitmen.

Valerio peered around the fender of the Rolls-Royce, his jaw clenched in cold fury. He spotted the driver of the lead Escalade—one of Veto’s newly acquired loyalists from the South Side.

Taking a measured, clinical breath, Valerio raised his pistol.

Bang.

The shot pierced the windshield with pinpoint accuracy. The driver slumped forward over the steering wheel, his foot locked down on the accelerator. The heavy Escalade careened out of control, smashing violently into a concrete pillar with a thunderous crunch that deployed the airbags and stalled the vehicle instantly.

“Ignatio, cover the rear!” Valerio ordered, never breaking his focus.

“Got it, Boss!”

Valerio turned his attention back to Danica, who was crouched safely behind the car, her hands clamped over her ears, her chest heaving. Despite the chaos, she wasn't crying; her brilliant mind was already calculating the odds.

“Valerio,” she called out over the sound of gunfire. “Veto isn't just trying to kill you. He’s trying to cut off your escape to the harbor. If we take the surface streets, we’ll walk right into an ambush by the city police on his payroll.”

Valerio’s eyes widened slightly in dark appreciation. Even under fire, her analytical brilliance never wavered.

“Then we take the old drainage tunnel beneath Sector D,” Valerio decided instantly, grabbing her hand and pulling her up. “It leads straight to the marina.”

Before the second Escalade could maneuver around the wreckage of the first, Valerio fired three rapid shots into its front tires, sending the heavy vehicle spinning uselessly on rubber rims against the concrete.

“Move! Now!” Valerio commanded.

With Ignatio laying down a relentless wall of covering fire, Valerio and Danica sprinted across the open garage toward the reinforced maintenance doors leading to the subterranean utility tunnels.

As they reached the heavy steel door, Valerio kicked it open, pulling Danica inside just as a burst of automatic gunfire pinged off the metal frame outside.

They plunged into the cool, damp darkness of the old Chicago drainage tunnels, leaving the chaos of the hotel far behind them. But Valerio knew this was only the beginning. Veto was waiting at the finish line, and the final reckoning between brothers was about to unfold.
