Chapter 4 - The Breach in the Perimeter

The illusion of peace shattered on a rainy Tuesday night at 11:42 PM.
Camille was in her third-floor office reviewing contracts when the estate’s security system didn't just beep—it screamed.
A high-pitched, strobing alarm flashed red across her desktop monitor. The perimeter motion sensors on the north gate had just been tripped.
Camille instantly accessed her security dashboard. The exterior cameras flickered to life. Through the sheets of driving rain, two dark figures in tactical rain gear were scaling the rear security fence near the perimeter hedge, moving with practiced, silent coordination.
Panic seized her throat. The messages from Lily Gamer99 rushed back into her mind with terrifying clarity. It wasn't a random prowler. It was a targeted breach. Someone was coming for Sloan.
Her fingers flew to her keyboard to call 911, but the office screen suddenly went black.
System Error: Local Network Severed.
They had cut the hardline fiber before scaling the fence. The police would take at least twelve minutes to navigate the winding Laurelhurst residential roads in this weather. Twelve minutes was an eternity.
Camille grabbed the heavy brass letter opener from her desk, her heart pounding in her ears, and moved toward the door.
Suddenly, her bedroom door opened.
Brennan Cross stood in the hallway. He wasn't wearing his usual work shirt; he wore a dark, form-fitting tactical fleece over a moisture-wicking tee. His face was carved from granite, completely devoid of panic, his eyes locked onto Camille with absolute, laser-focused authority.
"Stay in the master suite," Brennan instructed, his voice dropping into a low, uncompromising military cadence. "Lock the reinforced deadbolt behind me."
"Brennan, there are two of them—they have cut the lines, they're armed—" Camille stammered, her voice shaking.
"I know," Brennan interrupted smoothly, pulling a heavy-duty tactical flashlight and a pair of reinforced flex-cuffs from his belt holster. "That's why I've been waiting for them to take the bait."
Before Camille could process his words, Brennan turned and descended the back stairs into the darkness of the lower level.
Driven by a desperate maternal terror, Camille ignored his command. She ran down the hallway to her office workstation, bypassing the severed network cable by hot-spotting her laptop to her encrypted satellite phone. She pulled up the feed from her secret interior cameras—the ones the intruders didn't know existed, and which ran on an independent, battery-backed local mesh network.
The live grid popped up on her screen.
Camera 3: The back mudroom hallway.
The heavy glass door had been cleanly shattered. Two masked men, dressed in black tactical gear and carrying suppressed submachine guns, stepped stealthily into the house. They moved like professionals, sweeping their weapons across the dark corridor, communicating with hand signals.
They were heading straight down the east wing hallway toward Sloan’s bedroom.
Camille screamed silently, gripping the edge of her desk as she watched the live feed on her laptop.
Then, Camera 4 flickered.
Brennan Cross was already waiting in the shadows of the cross-hallway near the pantry.
He didn't yell. He didn't issue warnings.
As the lead intruder stepped past the pantry door, Brennan moved with the terrifying, economical speed of a former Tier-One operator. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second, grabbed the barrel of the intruder's weapon, forced it upward toward the ceiling, and delivered a devastating, lightning-fast palm strike to the man’s throat.
The first intruder collapsed instantly, unconscious before he hit the hardwood floor.
The second intruder whipped around, raising his weapon, but Brennan didn't hesitate. He launched himself forward, tackling the second man into the drywall with a thunderous crash that shook the camera mount. A fierce, silent struggle ensued in the dim corridor—fists, strikes, and muffled grunts—until Brennan swept the man’s legs out from under him and drove a precise knee into his solar plexus, pinning him flat to the floor.
Within forty-eight seconds, both intruders were unconscious, zip-tied, and stripped of their weapons.

Brennan stood up, adjusted his fleece collar, and calmly looked straight up into the corner molding where one of Camille’s secret cameras was mounted.
He didn't look angry. He just gave the tiny lens a slow, knowing nod, as if to say: I told you I had the perimeter covered, Ms. Ashford.
