Chapter 5 - A New Beginning Under the Fireworks

By 8:30 p.m., the tension of the afternoon had dissolved into the warm, smoky haze of a perfect July evening. The remaining guests had either quietly departed or wisely decided that the Whitmore family drama was too entertaining to miss, congregating near the back lawn to watch the private fireworks display over the estate's private lake.

I was sitting on a wooden bench near the hydrangea bushes, sharing a paper plate of my mother’s legendary potato salad that I had managed to salvage from the cooler in my truck, when Lily came running across the lawn.

"Dad!" she shouted, her sneakers kicking up grass clippings. "Is it true? Did the bad man in the funny suit get arrested by the police helicopter?"

I laughed, catching her as she hurled herself into my lap. "It wasn't a helicopter, Lily Bug, but yes, Mr. Langford had to leave early."

"And did the beautiful nemesis save the company?" Lily asked, lowering her voice to a dramatic conspiratorial whisper.

"She certainly did," a smooth, cultured voice answered from behind us.

Lily and I turned. Victoria was standing there, holding two plastic cups of lemonade, wearing a soft denim jacket over her evening sundress. She looked relaxed, approachable, and completely breathtaking in the twilight.

Lily stared at her for a moment, her eyes wide with a child's unfiltered wonder. "You're the nemesis."

Victoria chuckled, kneeling down on the grass so she was at eye level with my daughter. "Guilty as charged, Lily. But I think as of today, we might need to upgrade my title to something a bit more friendly. What do you think?"

Lily tilted her head, considering this deeply. "Can you still help me with my architectural sketchbooks on weekends?"

"I wouldn't miss it for the world," Victoria promised, offering her pinky finger.

Lily grinned and linked her pinky with Victoria’s. "Okay. Then you're officially part of the team."

As Lily bounced off toward the dessert table to hunt down a slice of apple pie, Victoria stood up slowly, walking over to the bench where I sat. She sat down right beside me, her shoulder pressing warmly against mine as the first brilliant streak of a red-white-and-blue firework exploded across the darkening night sky above the lake.

The vibrant colors painted her face in flickering shades of gold and crimson.

"You know," Victoria murmured, resting her hand over mine on the wooden bench, "this was supposed to be a fake relationship designed to survive a holiday barbecue."

"And look how that turned out," I smiled, intertwining my fingers with hers. "Federal indictments, family mutinies, and backyard potato salad."

Victoria leaned her head gently against my shoulder, watching the fireworks burst across the horizon. "Best fake relationship I've ever had, Henderson."

"Good," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss into her hair as the second wave of fireworks lit up the night. "Because I have absolutely no intention of letting you cancel my contract."
