Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confrontation and the Ultimate Test

Two weeks later, the fragile peace in the King household was suddenly shattered by an unexpected external crisis.
It was a Tuesday afternoon when Damian King received an urgent, alarming call from the board of directors at King Global Logistics. A hostile corporate raider, backed by a ruthless conglomerate, was attempting a surprise backdoor acquisition of company shares while Damian was tied up in negotiations. Rumors and manipulated financial reports were leaking to the press, threatening to tank the stock price before the market closed.
Damian was forced to call an emergency board meeting via secure video link from his home office, locking himself away for hours. The house grew tense, the atmosphere charged with corporate electricity.
Ethan, sensing the sudden shift in the air, began acting out. He slammed doors, refused his afternoon snack, and stomped around the penthouse like a caged animal.
"Your father is dealing with a very important business matter, Ethan," Evelyn Carter warned sharply as she walked past the boy in the hallway. "Do not go near his office."
Ethan scoffed, his rebellious streak overriding his common sense. Driven by a deep-seated fear that his father was slipping away into the corporate machine once again, the eight-year-old marched straight toward the heavy oak doors of Damian's private office.
Inside, Damian was shouting data figures into his headset, pacing back and forth across the room as hostile board members argued on the massive screen.
Before Evelyn could intercept him, Ethan twisted the brass doorknob and pushed the heavy door wide open.
"Daddy! You promised we would build the model rocket today!" Ethan yelled loudly, interrupting the multi-billion-dollar corporate conference call.
On the massive boardroom display screen, several powerful billionaire investors and stern-faced board directors froze, staring directly at the young boy who had just invaded the high-stakes meeting.
Damian stopped pacing, his face turning pale with a mix of fury and sheer panic. The hostile raiders on the call smirked, seeing an immediate PR weakness they could exploit.
"Ethan, get out of here right now!" Damian roared, losing his temper for the first time since Ariana had arrived. His voice echoed harshly through the penthouse. "This is business! Get out!"
Ethan flinched violently, tears instantly welling up in his fierce eyes. Shocked by his father's sudden explosion, the boy turned on his heel and bolted down the hallway toward his bedroom, slamming the door so hard it shook the architectural framework.
Damian stood frozen, breathing heavily, realizing he had just completely broken his promise and shattered the fragile trust he had spent weeks rebuilding. He put a hand over his face, cursing under his breath as the board members began murmuring on screen.
Before Damian could chase after his son, a calm, steady hand gently touched his shoulder.
Ariana stood beside him, having quietly entered the office. Her hazel eyes were firm, focused, and utterly resolute.
"Go handle your board meeting, Mr. King," Ariana said quietly, her voice cutting through the panic in the room. "Finish the acquisition. Protect your company. I'll handle Ethan."
Damian looked down at her, seeing an anchor in the middle of a raging hurricane. He swallowed hard, nodded curtly, and turned back to his screen, his voice returning to cold, ruthless corporate steel. "We resume negotiations. You just stepped into a trap you won't survive."
Meanwhile, Ariana walked down the long hallway toward Ethan’s bedroom. She knocked softly twice, but there was no answer, only muffled sobbing from inside.
Slowly, she pushed the door open. Ethan was curled up in a tight ball at the foot of his bed, his face buried in his pillows, shoulders shaking as he tried desperately to suppress his tears.
Ariana didn't rush in with empty platitudes. She walked over, sat down quietly on the edge of the mattress, and waited.
"He yelled at me," Ethan whispered into the pillow, his voice cracked and broken. "He never yells at me like that. He cares more about his stupid company than he cares about me."
"He cares about you more than anything in the world, Ethan," Ariana said softly, her voice wrapping around the boy like a warm blanket. "Do you know why he was screaming?"
Ethan sniffled, slowly lifting his head, his red-rimmed eyes looking up at her with raw vulnerability. "Why?"
"Because your father is fighting a war right now to protect everything he built—not just for himself, but to secure your future. When people are fighting for their survival, they make mistakes. He was terrified that his business rivals would use you to hurt him."
Ethan wiped his cheek with the back of his sleeve, processing her words. "He... he was scared?"
"Terrified," Ariana nodded gently. "Just like you were scared that he was slipping away. But running into a war zone shouting about a rocket isn't the way to get his attention, is it?"
Ethan looked down at his lap, shame washing over his anger. "No... I just wanted him to remember me."
"He never forgets you, Ethan. Not for a second. But a partnership goes both ways. If you want his respect as a young man, you have to learn to support him when the empire faces a storm, just like he supports you."
The boy sat in silence for a long time, the heavy weight of his anger finally melting away into deep, mature understanding.
An hour later, the heavy oak doors of Damian's home office clicked open. The corporate conference call had ended. Damian sat alone at his desk, his head in his hands, completely drained of energy. He had successfully farded off the hostile takeover, but he felt like an utter failure as a father.
Suddenly, the office door opened further.
Ethan walked slowly into the room, holding a small, folded piece of paper in his hands. He looked nervous, his eyes fixed on the floor.
Damian looked up, his heart stopping in his chest.
"Dad," Ethan said softly, his voice trembling slightly. "I... I'm sorry I interrupted your meeting. I know you were fighting for the company."
Damian stood up slowly from his executive chair, utterly stunned. He walked around the desk, kneeling down to be eye-level with his son.
Ethan handed him the folded paper. Damian unfolded it with shaking fingers. Inside was a neatly drawn picture of the two of them standing side-by-side, holding a model rocket, with a handwritten note that read: Dad, you win the war. Let's build the rocket tomorrow. - Ethan.
Damian’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears. He pulled his son into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying his face in the boy's shoulder.
"I am so sorry I yelled at you, son," Damian choked out, his voice thick with emotion. "I promise you, nothing—no company, no empire—will ever come before you."
Standing quietly in the doorway, Ariana watched the father and son embrace, a warm, proud smile gracing her lips. She turned to quietly slip away, letting them have their moment.
"Ariana," Damian called out, looking up from his son.
She paused, turning back.

"Stay," Damian said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with a profound warmth. "Stay as long as you want."
