Chapter 4 - The Hunt for the Truth

By 4:15 a.m., Daniel’s black armored Maybach was tearing through the quiet, dimly lit streets of East Los Angeles, cutting through the pre-dawn fog with the lethal precision of a guided missile. In the passenger seat sat Marcus Vance, head of Whitmore Holdings' private security detail, whom Daniel had woken up with a single, terrifyingly urgent phone call from the hospital.

“Boss, are you entirely certain about this?” Marcus asked, keeping his eyes on the road as he tapped commands into a tactical laptop. “If Miss Hart is tied up in a multi-million-dollar financial cover-up involving your brother... this goes far beyond domestic betrayal. This is a federal conspiracy.”

“I don't care if it goes to the White House, Marcus,” Daniel growled, staring out the window at the passing industrial warehouses. “Just step on it. If Vanessa sent cleanup crews after Maria, they might already be moving in on the boy.”

Fifteen minutes later, the Maybach slid silently to a curb outside a weathered, two-story apartment building on Maple Street. The neighborhood was dead quiet, save for the distant hum of the interstate.

Daniel flung his door open and jogged up the concrete steps to the third-floor landing, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles were stark white. He reached Apartment 3B and slammed his palm against the wooden door, shouting frantically.

“Open up! It’s Daniel Whitmore! Maria sent me!”

For a agonizing ten seconds, there was no sound. Then, the heavy deadbolt clicked, and the door cracked open a few inches. An elderly Hispanic woman peered out, clutching a crucifix in one hand and a heavy metal flashlight in the other, her eyes wide with terror.

“Maria is in the hospital!” Daniel announced immediately, raising his hands to show he was unarmed. “Some people are trying to hurt her, and they might be coming for Noah. Where is the boy?!”

The woman gasped, recognizing Daniel from the photographs Maria kept on her phone, and instantly flung the door wide open. “Dios mío! Come in! Come in!”

Daniel rushed into the cramped, impeccably clean living room. From the hallway, a tiny, wide-eyed boy of about seven years old emerged, clutching a worn-out stuffed animal, his dark curls messy from sleep.

“Are you... are you my mommy’s boss?” the boy asked, his voice trembling.

Daniel dropped heavily to one knee, looking into the boy’s face. The resemblance was undeniable—the exact same dark, expressive eyes that Andrew had possessed when they were children. A sharp pang of raw emotion pierced Daniel’s chest.

“I am, Noah,” Daniel said gently, keeping his voice steady and reassuring. “And your mommy sent me to bring you somewhere very safe. We need to leave right now.”

Less than three minutes later, Noah was bundled securely into the back of the Maybach between Marcus and Daniel, speeding away from the East LA apartment complex just as a pair of unmarked dark sedans slowly cruised down Maple Street, pulling up directly outside the building they had just evacuated.

Marcus glanced back through the tinted rear window, his hand resting on the tactical firearm holstered beneath his suit jacket. “Well, Boss... your fiancée is thorough. She sent a cleanup crew less than ten minutes behind us.”

Daniel didn't blink. He looked at little Noah, who had safely fallen asleep against his shoulder, exhausted from the terror of the night.

“Turn the car around,” Daniel instructed quietly, a cold, predatory smile touching the corner of his mouth. “We’re going back to the Beverly Hills mansion. It’s time for Vanessa and I to have a little chat.”
