Chapter 5 - A New Foundation Under the Sun

Six months later, the Mercer estate was just a memory—sold to a real estate development firm and demolished to make way for a public coastal park overlooking Lake Washington. The high-security gates, the cedar wall, and the blinking black cameras were all gone, replaced by open green grass, walking trails, and wildflowers where children could run without looking over their shoulders.
My life now had a completely different geometry.
I sat at a rustic wooden table in a sunlit café in downtown Seattle, the scent of roasted espresso beans and fresh pastries filling the crisp autumn air. Across from me sat Melissa, the dear friend I hadn't been allowed to see for three years, her laughter bubbling over as she bounced toddler Lily on her knee.
“I still can't believe you pulled off a legal takedown worthy of a John Grisham novel,” Melissa laughed, shaking her head in disbelief. “Adrian is facing twenty years in federal prison for securities fraud and domestic conspiracy. The mighty tech king has officially fallen.”
“He didn't fall because of me,” I said, taking a sip of my coffee, feeling the warm, steady beat of my own heart—unhurried, unmanaged, and entirely free. “He fell because he spent so much time building walls to keep the world out, he forgot to notice what was locked inside with him.”
My phone buzzed gently on the wooden tabletop. It wasn't an alert from a sleep tracker. It wasn't a demand for a progress report or a photo of my meal.
It was a text from my father: Sunday dinner at six. Bring the baby. I’m making your mother’s pot roast, and the front door is wide open.

I smiled, locked the screen, and slipped the phone into my bag—right beside my grandfather’s vintage fountain pen. The pen didn't contain secret files anymore. It just wrote checks for grocery lists, birthday cards, and the future.
The past was locked away in a courtroom vault, gathering dust. And for the first time in my life, my world had no cameras, no glass cages, and no masters—only sunlight, open doors, and a horizon that stretched out infinitely before us.
