Chapter 5 - The Final Stand and the Empire We Built

The heavy steel security doors at the end of the executive corridor began to groan under the concussive impact of a hydraulic breaching ram.
SLAM!
Metal warped against concrete.
Adrien didn't hesitate. With a motion so fast and fluid it looked like choreography, he unclipped a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol from a concealed shoulder holster beneath his vest and shoved it straight into my hands, wrapping my fingers tightly around the grip.
“Can you shoot?” he demanded, his voice dead calm, absolute focus replacing panic.
I looked down at the heavy firearm, then up at his eyes. My hands trembled, but my jaw set into a hard line. “My brother taught me how to handle a Glock when I was sixteen. Point and pull.”
“Safety is off. Keep behind my right shoulder,” Adrien commanded, drawing his own weapon as he positioned himself directly in front of the glass double doors leading into his office.
CRASH!
The security door gave way with a deafening shriek of torn metal.
Three heavily armed men in black tactical gear poured through the doorway, their assault rifles raised, scanning the dim, red-lit corridor. They didn't expect the CEO of Knight Enterprises to be standing in the open hallway waiting for them with a loaded weapon.
Adrien fired twice before they could adjust their barrels. The sharp, deafening cracks of gunfire echoed like thunder inside the executive suite, shattering the glass partitions and dropping the lead operative instantly.
“Clear right!” I yelled, pivoting on my heel as the second operative lunged around the mahogany reception desk, raising his rifle toward Adrien’s blind spot.
Acting purely on adrenaline, I raised the Sig Sauer, braced my right wrist with my left hand, and fired. The recoil slammed into my shoulder with brutal force, but the bullet clipped the operative’s tactical vest, spinning him off balance just long enough for Adrien to sweep his leg and slam him headfirst into the marble floor.
The third man threw down his weapon, raising his hands as Adrien’s pistol barrel locked firmly between his eyes.
“Who sent you?” Adrien growled, his voice a lethal whisper.
“Vance... Marcus Vance sends his regards,” the man choked out, blood dripping from a graze on his temple. “He’s hitting the New Jersey shipping docks right now. This was just a diversion to draw your primary security force away from the core servers!”
Adrien didn't waste another second on him. He brought the butt of his pistol down in a swift, crushing arc, sending the operative sprawling into unconsciousness.
He spun around, grabbing my arm, his chest heaving as he scanned me frantically from head to toe. “Are you hit? Briana, are you bleeding?”
“I’m fine!” I gasped, my hands still shaking as I lowered the heavy pistol. “I’m completely fine! But he said the docks—Adrien, your main shipping ledger is housed on the server farm beneath the New Jersey terminal!”
“It’s a trap,” Adrien realized instantly, his face hardening into absolute stone. “Vance isn't trying to take over the terminals. He’s trying to force me to pull my entire private security detail out of Manhattan so he can raid the central vault here and burn the evidence of his offshore accounts.”
“Then we don't call security,” I said, looking straight into his eyes with a fierce, unwavering resolution. “We use the override codes from your private terminal to lock down the vault remotely from right here, right now.”
Adrien stared at me for a single heartbeat, and in that gaze, there was no longer any hint of the man who had tried to drag me out of a club six weeks ago. There was only an equal. A partner.
“Show me the way, Mr. Knight,” I added, a breathless, fierce smile touching my lips.
Adrien grabbed my hand, his fingers intertwining tightly with mine, and pulled me toward his private terminal.
Three weeks later, the snow was falling softly over a quiet, breathtakingly clear Saturday morning in Central Park.
The Marcus Vance syndicate had imploded overnight. Armed with the digital proof and asset trails we had locked down during the breach, federal authorities and international investigators had dismantled Vance’s operations across three states before sunrise. The Knight Enterprises empire wasn't just safe; it was cleaner, stronger, and more legitimate than it had ever been in its history.
On the forty-second floor, my desk no longer looked like a botanical garden, though a single, perfect white rose sat in a crystal vase beside my monitor.
The sapphire bracelet rested proudly around my wrist, catching the winter sunlight as I typed out the morning schedule.
The private office door swung open. Adrien walked out, wearing a charcoal turtleneck and a tailored coat, holding two steaming cups of artisan coffee from the café down the street. He stopped beside my desk, setting one cup down before leaning casually against the edge.
“Morning, Miss Collins,” he said, a slow, warm smile breaking across his face.
“Morning, Mr. Knight,” I replied, looking up from my screen with a raised eyebrow. “Are you here to inspect my work, or are you just trying to find an excuse to distract your personal secretary?”
Adrien reached out, gently catching my hand—the one wearing the sapphire bracelet—and pulling me up smoothly from my chair until I was standing right in front of him.
“I’m here,” he murmured, his stormy eyes softening as he pulled me flush against his chest, “to formally update your employment contract.”
“Oh?” I tilted my head, smiling against his lapel. “What does the new clause say?”
May you like
“Clause one,” Adrien whispered, his lips brushing softly against my forehead before trailing down to capture mine in a slow, deep, perfect kiss. “No more corporate boundaries. No more hiding in archives. And from now on... we make the rules together.”
“Accepted,” I whispered against his lips, right before the world outside faded completely away.
