Chapter 4 - The Confession of the Setup

It happened on a rainy Tuesday evening in Aleandro's penthouse study. The city lights flickered through the floor-to-ceiling windows as the rain beat a steady, rhythmic tattoo against the glass.

I was organizing the quarterly audit reports on his desk when I noticed an anomaly in the digital archive files—an encrypted sub-folder labeled Project Veto. Curious, I clicked it open.

My breath caught in my throat.

There were digital surveillance logs, time-stamped photographs, and detailed behavioral notes—all of them tracking my movements at the café, my mother's medical appointments, and my apartment building, dating back three months before the night I "found" his wallet at Veto’s.

My knees went weak. I backed away from the desk as the study door clicked open and Aleandro walked in, shedding his wet wool overcoat.

"Ellie?" he asked, his voice softening when he saw my face.

I held up the tablet, my hand trembling so badly I could barely keep it steady. "The wallet," I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "At Veto’s. It wasn't actually lost, was it?"

Aleandro froze. The color drained from his face, a heavy, suffocating silence crashing down between us like a physical weight.

"No," he said quietly.

"It was planted."

"Yes."

"You staged the whole thing. You set up the lost wallet, the cash, the timing—just to test my honesty."

"Yes," he repeated, his voice barely audible above the hum of the HVAC system.

The betrayal hit me with the force of a physical blow. I felt the ground give way beneath my feet, all the gratitude and respect I had built up over the past months turning to dust in a single second.

"How long?" I choked out, tears burning the backs of my eyes. "How long had you been watching me before that night?"

He didn't answer quickly enough.

"Aleandro! How long?"

"Months," he confessed, stepping forward with his hands raised defensively. "Ellie, listen to me—"

"Don't touch me!" I screamed, backing away until my spine hit the glass window. "You watched me drown! You watched me struggle to pay for my mother's medicine, wondering if we’d have electricity, while you sat in your ivory tower orchestrating a test like some kind of sick psychological god!"

"I needed someone I could trust with my life!" he shouted back, his own composure finally cracking, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Do you have any idea what kind of people surround me? Everyone has an angle, everyone has a price! I needed to know if you were genuine before I brought you into my world!"

"So you played with my life like it was a chess piece!" I wiped a furious tear from my cheek, my voice shaking with rage. "You didn't hire an assistant, Aleandro. You bought a lab rat!"

Before he could answer, the heavy security alarm on the private penthouse elevator chimed twice—a code that meant perimeter breach.

Vincent burst through the study doors, his gun drawn, breathing heavily. "Mr. Castiano! We have a breach on the lower service lift. Russo’s men. They bypassed the biometric locks."

Aleandro’s expression shifted instantly from personal devastation to cold, lethal calculation. He drew his Sig Sauer from his shoulder holster, his eyes snapping back to me with absolute urgency.

"Ellie. Go to the panic room behind the library bookshelf right now."

"No," I said, my voice hardening. "I'm done taking your orders."

"This isn't a test!" he roared, shoving a heavy pistol into Vincent’s hands as he guided me toward the rear corridor. "Russo knows about the audit files. He knows you have access to everything. You are a target now!"

Before I could reach the safety of the corridor, the private elevator doors slid open with a sharp ding.

Michael Russo stepped out into the penthouse foyer, flanked by two armed men in tactical gear. He wore a sickening, victorious smile as he leveled a suppressor-fitted pistol right toward us.

"Well, well, well," Russo purred, stepping onto the Persian rug. "Look at the happy couple. You really had no idea why he chose you out of all the waitresses in Boston, did you, Ellie?"

I froze, my heart stopping in my chest as Aleandro stepped directly in front of me, shielding my body with his own.

May you like

"Shut your mouth, Michael," Aleandro hissed, his weapon locked onto Russo’s chest.

Russo chuckled darkly, his eyes gleaming with malice. "Oh, I'm going to tell her everything, Castiano. I’m going to tell her the real reason your face stopped her cold the first time you walked into Veto’s—and why you couldn't afford to let her walk away."
