Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Thomas

Word travels at light-speed in a city like Atlanta, especially when a billionaire tech mogul is involved. By noon, the media had pieced together the incredible narrative: the kidnapping of young Malik Pierce, his miraculous escape, his days wandering the urban core, and his eventual sanctuary inside a modest apartment shared by a courageous young woman whom her own elite family had reportedly cast out just hours prior.

My phone—the old burner backup I pulled from my drawer—rang endlessly. Khloe called crying hysterically, babbling about family loyalty and misunderstandings. My mother left a frantic voicemail claiming everything was a joke taken out of context. Even my brother-in-law Brad sent a corporate-toned text trying to schedule a “family brunch to clear the air.”

I deleted every single message without listening.

Meanwhile, Elijah Pierce did not waste a single second exercising his influence. As it turned out, Elijah’s corporate legal foundation had been auditing various tax-exempt non-profit organizations across the Southeast region for months, investigating shell corporations used to siphon charitable funds into private real estate portfolios.

And right at the top of that federal investigation ledger sat Bishop Thomas’s megachurch expansion trust.

Two days after Malik was safely returned to his family, federal investigators and IRS forensic accountants walked unannounced into Bishop Thomas’s administrative offices during a live-streamed board meeting. They seized hard drives, froze church expansion accounts, and slapped my father with multiple federal counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, and misuse of charitable donations.

The state senator and city councilmen who had dined on roasted lamb at our family table instantly released public statements distancing themselves from Bishop Thomas, claiming they had been deceived by his pious facade.

My father’s empire of manufactured righteousness collapsed in a matter of forty-eight hours.

True to form, my family tried to weather the storm by playing the victim, but the public backlash was insurmountable. The congregation split, donors fled, and the local media had a field day contrasting the Bishop’s multi-million-dollar luxury lifestyle with his daughter living in a cramped apartment because she chose humanity over hypocrisy.

Amidst all the chaos, my phone buzzed quietly with an unknown, encrypted number.

I answered it cautiously.

“Zuri Thomas?” a smooth, professional voice asked.

“Speaking.”

“This is Director Vance of the Pierce Philanthropic Foundation. Mr. Elijah Pierce has requested a formal meeting at our downtown headquarters this afternoon regarding a permanent initiative for urban child advocacy and trauma recovery. He has designated you as the founding executive director, complete with full endowment backing. Do you have time to review the corporate charter at three o'clock?”

I stared out my apartment window, watching the rain finally clear away to reveal a brilliant, sunlit Atlanta skyline.

“Tell Mr. Pierce,” I smiled, “that I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”
