Chapter 5 - Dawn Over Beacon Hill

The morning sun rose slowly over Boston Harbor, casting a warm, golden glow across the wet slate rooftops of Beacon Hill. Inside the master study of the Duca estate, the heavy scent of fresh coffee and roasted pastries replaced the stale, suffocating dust of the hidden chamber.

An ambulance and two unmarked federal vehicles sat quietly parked out on the cobblestone street below. Sal Marcone and his surviving gunman were currently handcuffed in the back of a police transport van, staring bleakly at decades of federal racketeering charges brought down by a comprehensive data packet I had personally handed over to the authorities.

The stolen ledgers—the very documents my father had used to corrupt half the city—were now burning safely in the mansion's massive stone fireplace, turning into harmless gray ash one page at a time.

In the private sitting area, my aunt Elena sat wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, sipping hot tea with trembling hands. A team of private doctors I trusted implicitly had already examined her, confirming that despite severe malutrition and decades of isolation, she was remarkably resilient and would make a full physical recovery.

Grace Harper sat across from her, holding a steaming cup of her own while gently stroking little Lily’s hair as the baby slept soundly in her lap.

I stood by the window, watching the city wake up, when a small tug caught at the hem of my trousers.

I looked down. Mia was standing there, holding a half-eaten blueberry scone in one hand and looking up at me with her bright, intelligent eyes.

"Is she going to stay with us now, Mr. Duca?" Mia asked softly.

I knelt down, resting my forearms on my knees, and offered the little girl a rare, genuine smile—the first one I had worn in years.

"Yes, Mia," I said, my voice warm and steady. "Aunt Elena is going to stay right here in this house where she belongs. And as for you and your mother..." I reached into my pocket, pulling out a heavy set of keys and a freshly printed employment contract. "Your mother is officially the head estate manager of this property, with a salary that covers your college fund, your housing, and as many blueberry scones as you want."

Mia’s eyes went wide with delight. She didn't hesitate—she wrapped her small arms tightly around my neck in a fierce, unexpected hug, burying her face against my shoulder.

I froze for a second, unaccustomed to such pure, uncalculated affection. Then, slowly, I raised my arms and hugged the little girl back.

Behind us, Elena laughed softly, a musical sound that hadn't been heard in these walls for over forty years, while Grace wiped a happy tear from her cheek.

The dark, blood-soaked legacy of the Duca family had finally come to an end. We weren't hiding monsters behind our walls anymore.

We were finally building a home.
