Chapter 4 - Breaking the Gates

The iron gates of the Sterling estate loomed against the evening sky like the bars of a medieval fortress. Security cameras blinked red lights from the top of the stone pillars, sweeping the immaculate landscaping of the private driveway. We didn't care about the cameras, the alarms, or the guards. We had the truth, and no amount of wealth or corporate protection was going to keep us away from the girl who belonged in our family.

I parked our sedan half a mile down the road, and Logan and I walked the remaining distance through the thick perimeter woods, using the shadows of the ancient oak trees to mask our approach.

"Stay close to me," I whispered, gripping a printed copy of the hospital adoption log and the original cassette tape tucked safely inside my jacket pocket. "We aren't here to cause a scene. We are here to talk to Richard Sterling face-to-face."

"And if he doesn't want to talk?" Logan asked, his jaw set, his eyes fixed on the brilliantly lit mansion ahead.

"Then we let the whole world know what his foundation did," I replied firmly.

We slipped past the side garden, where a massive lawn party was evidently underway. Wealthy guests in formal attire mingled near a glowing pool, drinking champagne and laughing under strings of fairy lights. Among them, dressed in a stunning white gown that mirrored the color of the lilies Logan had spent a decade growing, stood Chloe Sterling.

As we stepped out from the tree line and onto the stone patio, the music seemed to fade into the background. Several guests turned to look at us, murmuring in confusion at our casual clothes and determined expressions.

"Excuse me, you can't be here—" a private security guard stepped forward, reaching out to block our path.

"Get your hands off me!" Logan snapped, brushing past the man with a fierce intensity that caught the guard completely off guard.

Logan walked straight across the patio, his eyes locked onto the young woman by the pool. Chloe turned around, her glass of sparkling water hovering near her lips as she noticed the teenage boy marching directly toward her, followed by a frantic-looking woman.

"Can I help you?" Chloe asked, her tone polite, though slightly unnerved by our sudden appearance.

"Your name isn't Sterling," Logan said, stopping just a few feet away from her. His voice was breathless, carrying an emotional weight that made the surrounding guests fall completely silent. "Your name is Lily Vance. You were born twelve minutes after me, on October fourteenth, fifteen years ago."

Chloe recoiled, her eyes widening in shock. "What are you talking about? Who are you?"

Before she could retreat further, an older, silver-haired man in an expensive tailored tuxedo pushed his way through the crowd. Richard Sterling. His face was a mask of cold fury as he recognized us.

"Security!" Richard barked, his voice carrying across the entire courtyard. "Remove these trespassers immediately!"

"Don't you dare touch us, Richard!" I stepped forward, pulling the cassette tape and the hospital records out of my coat and holding them up high for everyone at the party to see. "You bought my daughter fifteen years ago! You covered up a child trafficking scheme through your hospital board, and the entire city is going to know about it unless you let her hear the truth right now!"

The crowd gasped. Whispers broke out instantly, smartphones whipped out from pockets, and the camera flash of public exposure blinded the wealthy philanthropist for a crucial second.

Richard’s face drained of color. He looked at Logan, then at Chloe, and finally at the cassette tape in my hand. He realized the game was up. The airtight fortress of lies he had built had finally crumbled under the weight of a brother's love and a mother's relentless fury.
