Chapter 4 - The Corporate War Room

By Friday night—exactly one week after Lauren had politely dismantled my romantic self-esteem—Claire and I were sitting in a corner booth at The Copper Still, a dimly lit speakeasy tucked behind an antique bookstore in LoDo.

There were no awkward pauses. No forced conversation about hiking trails. Within ten minutes, we were deep into a passionate, highly technical debate over whether historic preservation laws in Colorado favored commercial developers or stifled urban growth, while sharing a plate of artisanal duck fat fries.

“You’re ruthless, you know that?” I laughed, wiping my hands on a napkin as she successfully dismantled my argument about zoning variances.

“I’m thorough,” Claire corrected, taking a sip of an old fashioned. “There’s a difference. Ruthlessness is messy. Thoroughness is permanent.”

“Remind me never to argue with you in a court of law.”

“Oh, you wouldn't survive five minutes in a deposition with me, Ethan. I’d have you confessing to crimes you didn't commit just by raising an eyebrow.”

“Try it,” I challenged, leaning across the small wooden table.

She held my gaze for a long moment, her green eyes dark and glittering in the amber candlelight, before a slow smile spread across her face. “Not yet. Saving that for our anniversary.”

Before I could formulate a reply, the heavy wooden door of the speakeasy swung open, letting in a gust of crisp autumn air and the muffled hum of downtown traffic.

A familiar voice cut through the ambient jazz playing overhead.

“I’m just saying, Marcus, if we don't grab a table now, we’ll be waiting an hour for a booth.”

I froze.

About twenty feet away, standing near the host stand with a tall, broad-shouldered man in a fitted navy suit, was Lauren.

She looked radiant in a burgundy wrap dress, laughing as Marcus—who apparently filled the exact medical-sales-rep archetype she supposedly preferred—placed a proprietary hand on the small of her back.

For a split second, I felt that old, familiar reflex of awkwardness. The sudden desire to shrink down into my booth, pull my jacket collar up, and avoid the inevitable polite small talk of Oh, hey, fancy seeing you here.

Then I felt a warm, firm hand slide across the wooden table and wrap its fingers securely around mine.

I looked down. Claire’s fingers were laced through mine. When I looked back up, she wasn't cringing or hiding. Her chin was lifted, her expression calm, collected, and radiating an effortless, terrifying level of superiority.

“Your ex is heading this way,” Claire murmured quietly, her lips twitching with amusement. “Shall I propose to you again loudly so she thinks you have a harem?”

Before I could answer, Lauren and her date were steered by the host directly toward the table next to us.

The collision was inevitable.

Lauren turned her head, her eyes locking onto mine over the top of the wooden partition. Her polite, date-night smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated shock.

“Ethan?” she gasped, stopping dead in her tracks.

Marcus blinked, looking from Lauren to me, and then—fatally—down to our interlocked hands resting on the table.

I gave a polite, measured nod. “Hey, Lauren. Good to see you.”

“You’re... oh,” she stammered, her gaze darting to Claire, taking in the expensive silk blouse, the sharp confidence, and the unmistakable air of a woman who owned the room. “I didn't realize... you were here with someone.”

“We’re celebrating,” Claire said smoothly, her voice clear, bell-like, and carrying just enough aristocratic chill to frost the windows. She lifted her old fashioned in a silent toast. “Acquisitions are notoriously difficult, but the results are always worth it.”

Lauren’s face flushed a delicate shade of crimson. She offered a tight, strained smile. “Right. Well. Have a great evening.”

“You too,” I said mildly.

As Lauren and Marcus hurried off toward a distant corner booth, I let out a long, slow breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. I looked back down at Claire, whose hand was still warmly locked in mine.

“Acquisitions?” I teased, raising an eyebrow. “Is that what we’re calling a Friday night date?”

“Consider it a hostile takeover of your emotional availability,” she replied without missing a beat, sliding her thumb across my knuckles. “And based on the evidence, the merger is proceeding ahead of schedule.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “You are completely impossible.”

May you like

“And yet, you haven't called security yet.”

“Give me time. The night is young.”
