Chapter 4 - The 9:00 AM Execution

The executive boardroom on the thirty-fifth floor of Northgate Tower was packed.

Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the polished mahogany conference table where six members of Northgate’s board of directors sat murmuring among themselves. At the head of the table sat Travis Fenwick.

He looked immaculate. His custom-tailored Brioni suit fit him like a second skin, his silver-streaked hair was combed back with military precision, and an easy, triumphant smirk played at the corners of his mouth. Today was the day. By noon, the restructuring vote would pass, the $3.4 million would be safely locked away in offshore accounts, his divorce from me would be legally settled on pennies on the dollar, and he would be free to celebrate with Vanessa in Cabo.

The heavy oak doors swung open.

Travis didn't even look up as he adjusted his gold-plated fountain pen. "Let's begin, shall we? As you all know, current market pressures require an immediate structural realignment of our liquid assets—"

"Before we begin discussing asset realignment, Travis," a crisp, authoritative voice cut across the room like a razor blade, "we have a slight procedural housekeeping matter to address."

Travis froze. He looked up, expecting to see his chief financial officer or corporate counsel.

Instead, walking through the double doors was Arthur Pendelton. Behind him walked two armed corporate security officers, followed by Claire Bennett carrying a stack of thick legal binders, and trailing right behind them—wearing a sharp, perfectly tailored charcoal pantsuit with her hair pulled back into a sleek chignon—was me.

The color instantly drained from Travis's face. The easy smirk vanished, replaced by a look of absolute, stunned horror.

"A-Arthur?" Travis stammered, half-rising from his leather executive chair. "What... what are you doing here? This is an internal Northgate executive board meeting. Pendelton Capital isn't scheduled for a portfolio review until—"

"Until I received a rather enlightening midnight briefing regarding corporate embezzlement, forged financial authorizations, and systematic asset stripping," Arthur interrupted smoothly, walking straight toward the head of the table. He didn't wait for an invitation; he pulled out the chair directly to Travis's left and sat down, resting his hands on his cane.

"That's absurd!" Travis shouted, his voice cracking slightly as panic flickered in his eyes. He glared frantically around the room at the other board members. "This is an unauthorized intrusion! Security, remove these people immediately! Claire, what is the meaning of this? Why is she—why is Eliza here?!"

I stepped forward, stopping right at the edge of the conference table. I placed both hands on the polished wood, leaning in slightly so Travis had no choice, absolutely no choice, but to look into the eyes of the woman he thought he had successfully reduced to a night cleaner pushing a garbage cart.

"Good morning, Travis," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent, breathless room. "Looking for your authorization forms? I believe these belong to the board."

I reached into my leather portfolio and dropped three heavy documents onto the polished wood right in front of him:

The federal receivership petition freezing all corporate and personal accounts tied to Apex Holdings.

The forensic audit report prepared by Pendelton Capital detailing the exact routing of the $3.4 million embezzlement scheme.

An emergency board resolution—already signed by Arthur Pendelton and three major institutional stakeholders holding sixty-four percent of Northgate voting shares—immediately stripping Travis Fenwick of his title as Chief Executive Officer, revoking his corporate signing authority, and initiating termination proceedings for gross criminal misconduct.

Travis stared down at the papers. His hands began to shake violently. He reached out, grabbing the top page, his eyes darting frantically across the legal terminology.

"No," Travis whispered, shaking his head in denial. "No, this is impossible. The server logs—the access history—it shows Eliza was cleaning the finance department after hours! She had access! Her badge—"

"My badge recorded every single movement I made," I interrupted, my voice sharp and unwavering. "Including the exact moments Claire and I downloaded your encrypted correspondence, backed up your offshore wire instructions, and recorded your conversation in this very office last Tuesday night admitting to the entire fraudulent setup."

Travis whipped his head around, his eyes locking onto Claire standing by the door. "You! You little traitorous bitch—"

"That’s enough, Mr. Fenwick," one of the independent board members, a stern-faced woman named Evelyn Vance, snapped coldly. "Sit down before I have security physically remove you from the premises."

Travis sank slowly back into his leather chair. The invincible, untouchable corporate titan was gone. In his place sat a desperate, cornered man realizing that his entire empire had just collapsed around him like a house of cards built on sand.

Arthur Pendelton turned his head slowly toward Travis, his expression icy and impassive.

"Mr. Fenwick," Arthur said quietly. "Federal investigators from the SEC and the Department of Justice are currently downstairs waiting to escort you to a federal holding facility to answer for wire fraud, corporate forgery, and institutional asset tampering. I'd suggest you don't make their job any more difficult than it already is."

As two security guards stepped forward, placing firm hands on Travis's shoulders and lifting him out of his chair, Travis turned his head one last time. His eyes met mine. There was no arrogance left in them. Just stark, hollow terror.

"Eliza..." he whispered hoarsely as they hauled him toward the doors. "Please... we have children. Think of Owen and Maisie..."

"I am thinking of them, Travis," I replied softly, watching as the heavy oak doors closed behind him with a dull, final thud. "Every single day."
