Chapter 5 - A New Beginning in the Shadows

Three weeks later, the morning sun shone brightly through the glass windows of the Carter Logistics penthouse office.
The room looked immaculate. The old papers had been organized, the broken furniture replaced, and the air smelled faintly of fresh coffee and cedarwood.
Cindy sat at her desk, typing furiously on her mechanical keyboard, her hair tied back in a neat ponytail. A small, elegant vase filled with fresh white lilies sat beside her monitor—a silent gesture from a boss who rarely did things by halves.
The private elevator chime pinged softly.
The doors slid open, and Andrew stepped out, wearing his signature tailored charcoal suit, his jacket casually unbuttoned. He walked past her desk without stopping, heading toward his private office door.
As he reached the threshold, he paused, turning back to look at her.
“Cindy.”
She looked up, raising an eyebrow with that familiar, slightly exasperated expression she always wore when managing his impossible life. “Yes, Mr. Carter? Did I schedule another board meeting you’re planning to ignore?”
Andrew let out a rare, genuine smile—a soft, quiet expression that transformed his harsh features entirely.
“Cancel my afternoon meetings,” he said.
Cindy frowned. “You have a lunch with the municipal infrastructure committee at twelve-thirty. If you miss that, the city council will—”
“Cancel them,” Andrew repeated smoothly, taking a step closer to her desk. “We’re leaving early.”
“Leaving? Where are we going?”
“Nowhere dangerous,” Andrew said, his dark eyes holding hers with a quiet, lingering intensity that made her breath catch in her throat. “Just a small bistro down by the harbor. I promised you a proper lunch that doesn't involve cold coffee and spreadsheets while hiding from a war.”
Cindy stared at him for a long moment, the faint memory of that rainy, terrifying night fading away completely beneath the warmth of the morning sun. A genuine, beautiful smile spread across her face.
“Only if I get to pick the restaurant,” she said playfully.
May you like
“It’s yours,” Andrew replied softly. “Everything I built is yours to manage, anyway.”
He turned and walked into his office, leaving Cindy sitting at her desk with a fluttering heart and a smile she couldn't wipe off her face. The mafia boss who ruled the underworld with an iron fist had finally found his true anchor—and for the first time in his life, he wasn't planning on letting go.
