Chapter 8 - THE THING HE TRIED TO RECLAIM

Victor’s gaze settled on the invoice before Dante reached the desk.
“You brought paperwork to a family dinner?” he asked.
“I brought a debt.”
Dante placed the blood-speckled page beside the thin cash envelope. Orsini glanced toward Victor, and that single reflex told Dante the documents frightened both men.
Victor recovered first. “The doctor was paid.”
“She received one-third.”
“Then someone made a clerical mistake.”
“Your signature authorized seventeen thousand.”
Victor reached toward the envelope. “Give me that. I’ll reconcile it.”
Dante covered it with his hand. “Why do you need the original?”
“I don’t.”
“You reached for it.”
Victor’s composure cracked. “That envelope should have been burned with the rest of Paolo’s things.”
Silence consumed the office.
Orsini’s head turned sharply toward him.
Dante allowed the words to remain between them. “How did you know Paolo’s belongings were burned?”
Victor realized too late that he had answered a question no one asked. His expression hardened.
“You’ve become weak. Letting a desperate woman drag you around by an invoice. Letting police into our warehouses.”
“Paolo is alive.”
For the first time, genuine fear appeared in Victor’s eyes.
“No,” Matteo whispered from the door.
Dante looked at him. “He identified both of you.”
Victor shoved back from the desk. “Paolo should have bled out before that woman ever touched him.”
The court-authorized transmitter beneath Dante’s shirt captured every syllable.
Victor saw Dante’s stillness and understood. “You’re recording me.”
Orsini drew first.
Leo burst through the steel door as the gun cleared Orsini’s jacket. The shot struck Leo beneath the ribs and spun him against the wall. Dante overturned the desk, driving Victor backward while federal agents shouted from the corridor.
Matteo reached for the invoice instead of his weapon.
That choice completed the physical chain. His fingerprint landed in Paolo’s dried blood at the folded edge, exactly where Camila remembered his hand touching the envelope at her clinic.
Orsini fired again. The round tore through Dante’s jacket but missed his body. Agents forced the door open, disarmed Matteo, and drove Orsini to the floor. Victor fled through the rear corridor toward the medical room where Camila waited.
The alarm reached her before the agents did.
Victor entered with blood on his cuff and a compact pistol pressed against his thigh. Camila saw the weapon and moved behind the treatment cart.
“You,” he said. “All of this because you couldn’t accept five thousand dollars.”
“All of this because you thought fear made people quiet.”
He lunged for her necklace when he saw the tiny recording light reflected in the medal’s polished surface. Camila drove the metal treatment cart into his injured knee. The pistol struck the floor and slid beneath the examination table.
Victor caught her coat and pulled her backward, but Camila rotated toward his thumb exactly as she had once warned Dante. The joint bent beyond its safe range. Victor cried out and released her.
Dante reached the doorway.
He could have taken the fallen gun. He could have killed the man who betrayed him, attacked his clinic, and tried to murder him beside his mother’s grave.
Instead, he kicked the weapon toward Detective Lim.
“Arrest him.”
Agents forced Victor to his knees. Camila ran past them to Leo.
The bullet had entered below his left ribs. His skin was already gray, and every breath came wet and shallow. Camila sealed the wound, inserted a decompression needle when his lung began collapsing, and maintained pressure while paramedics entered.
Dante knelt on Leo’s other side.
“Stay with me,” he said.
Leo’s eyes opened slightly. “She charges seventeen.”
Camila almost laughed through the tears burning her eyes. “He already paid.”
Leo survived the ambulance ride and underwent emergency surgery at St. Catherine. Orsini, Victor, and Matteo were taken into federal custody. Simultaneous warrants closed three warehouses and intercepted a fentanyl shipment large enough to kill thousands of people.
At dawn, Lim met Dante outside Leo’s operating room.
“You understand the cooperation agreement doesn’t erase what you’ve done.”
“Yes.”
“You’re under arrest for racketeering conspiracy, money laundering, illegal gambling, and obstruction.”
Camila watched Dante offer his wrists without resistance.
Before Lim led him away, he looked at Camila. There was no empire in his face, no command and no expectation.
Only the man beneath the name.
Camila stepped close and touched the repaired medal above her heart.
“I’ll see you when the truth is finished,” she said.
May you like
Dante’s eyes held hers.
“For once,” he answered, “I’m not afraid of the bill.”
