Chapter 1 - The Face in the Crowd

The autumn air outside Memorial Stadium cut with a sharp, frost-tipped bite, but inside, the roar of ten thousand screaming fans created a wall of sound that vibrated straight through the concrete bleachers. Banners hung from the upper decks, and the stadium floodlights cut through the evening gloom, casting long, sharp shadows across the manicured green turf. It was the state high school soccer championship, the culmination of a grueling season and fourteen years of early morning practices, torn cleats, and sacrifices that stretched far beyond my modest paycheck at the auto repair shop.

I stood near the edge of the players' tunnel, my hands shoved deep into the pockets of my worn leather jacket, scanning the packed stands. My heart hammered against my ribs with a mix of fierce pride and a cold, heavy knot of dread that hadn’t left my chest since Mason dropped the bombshell the morning before.

David was here.

True to his word—or rather, true to Mason’s secret arrangement—the biological father who had fled a grieving four-year-old child fourteen years ago had returned. I hadn't seen him since the funeral, since the days when our lives splintered apart. But as I scanned the VIP section near midfield, my eyes locked onto a man wearing an expensive tailored charcoal overcoat, a silk scarf, and an impeccably groomed haircut. He sat with an attractive, polished woman by his side, laughing quietly and checking his gold-plated watch. He looked wealthy, successful, and completely untouched by the decade and a half of sleepless nights, financial panic, and solitary parenting I had poured into raising his abandoned son.

My hands clenched into tight fists inside my pockets. Part of me wanted to storm up those aluminum stairs, grab him by his expensive lapels, and remind him of the dry cereal bowl, the empty house, and the terrified four-year-old boy who cried himself to sleep asking for his mom and dad. But I stayed put. I had promised Mason. I had told him that morning, through gritted teeth and a fractured heart, that I would trust him.

On the field, the referee’s whistle shrilled piercingly through the crisp night air. The game was underway, and the state championship was on the line.
