Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of Lies

My father’s breath hitched. For forty years, he had been the undisputed king of his domain, barking orders and demanding absolute obedience from everyone around him—especially his family. The thought that his own daughter could stare him down without a flicker of fear clearly dismantled whatever control he thought he still possessed.

“You’re a disgrace,” he muttered, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. “You abandoned this family. You walked away from everything we built, and now you crawl back out of the woodwork just to steal the spotlight on the most important day of my life?”

“Steal your spotlight?” I repeated softly, letting a cold smile touch my lips. “Father, I didn't even know what day your retirement was until three days ago. Your golden boy forgot to send an invitation, or perhaps your secretary simply followed your standing orders to keep my name off every record associated with the Vale name. But make no mistake: I didn't come here for you.”

Before he could formulate a retort, Major General Vance cleared his throat loudly from the podium, tapping the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, before we proceed with the traditional roast and toast portion of Lieutenant General Vale’s retirement, we have a special presentation,” Vance announced, his voice echoing through the hall. “An operational review of Fort Halder’s regional command structure has revealed some critical discrepancies that require immediate executive intervention. And who better to address them than the Director of Global Intelligence Operations herself?”

A murmur swept through the auditorium. The defense executives, visiting politicians, and retired generals exchanged confused glances. My father staggered backward, his eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated terror. He knew what the Directorate of Global Intelligence Operations meant. It wasn't just a fancy title; it was the division responsible for auditing high-level military contracts, investigating command corruption, and dismantling administrative embezzlement networks within military installations.

Penn stood up abruptly from his seat, his voice cracking slightly as he shouted out into the room.

“This is an outrage! My father is a decorated war hero! You can't just ambush his retirement ceremony with an unscheduled audit!”

The entire auditorium went dead silent. Penn’s outburst exposed far more than he realized. An ordinary family member sitting in the audience would have no idea what an "audit" entailed or why an intelligence directorate presence constituted a threat. But someone deeply intertwined with defense contracting and backroom military logistics? That was a different story entirely.

Vance didn't even look at Penn. He simply nodded toward the side doors.

Two military police officers in crisp dress uniforms walked into the auditorium, flanked by federal investigators holding thick leather-bound folders stamped with classified red headers.

“Sit down, Mr. Vale,” Vance commanded, his tone glacial. “No one mentioned an audit yet. Unless, of course, you already knew what we were looking for.”
