Chapter 3 - The Dark Family Secret Uncovered

The words hung in the sterile air of the hospital room like a falling guillotine. Deliberate poisoning. Someone was trying to kill my four-year-old son—or at least make him chronically ill. And the timeline Dr. Harrison had provided pointed a neon arrow directly at one person: Madeline Hayes.
Brandon dropped into a plastic chair, burying his face in his large, trembling hands. The tough, confident man who had thrown his own mother out of the house just hours ago was completely shattered. I knelt in front of him, taking his hands in mine, feeling the cold sweat coating his skin.
"Brandon, look at me," I said, my voice trembling with a mixture of raw grief and boiling fury. "Your mother. She did this."
"I... I can't believe it," Brandon choked out, a tear finally cutting a clean path down his cheek. "She’s cold, yes. She’s arrogant, elitist, and she never wanted us to marry because she thought you weren't from 'her social tier.' But poisoning a child? Her own flesh and blood? That’s... that’s psychotic."
"Think about everything she said and did, Brandon!" I urged, pressing the advantage. "She never called him her grandson. She looked at him with absolute disdain from the day he was born. And when you shouted at her on the patio, she didn't look shocked—she looked satisfied. She knew the confrontation was happening, but she didn't care because she thought her dirty work was already done!"
Suddenly, Brandon’s head snapped up. His eyes widened as a terrifying realization washed over him. He stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the linoleum floor.
"The old family safety deposit box," Brandon muttered, his voice shaking. "When my father passed away two years ago, he left a locked metal box in the study at the main estate. Mom kept the key, but Dad gave me the secondary combination before he died because he said there were documents in there pertaining to the family trust and... and an old medical history file."
"What kind of medical history file?" I asked, standing up to face him.

"Dad always told me that my mother had a history of severe postpartum psychosis after giving birth to my older brother, David—a brother I never knew because he supposedly 'died of sudden infant death syndrome' when he was six months old," Brandon said, his words tumbling over each other in a frantic rush. "Mom always told everyone that David had a weak heart and just stopped breathing in his crib. But Dad looked at me once, before he passed, and whispered that Madeline never bonded with any child who didn't fit her exact genetic perfection mold... and that David hadn't died of natural causes."
The puzzle pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. Madeline wasn't just a cruel mother-in-law; she was a serial monster hiding behind a veneer of Nashville high-society aristocracy. She had targeted David decades ago, and now she was targeting Luke because she believed Brandon had 'tainted' the family bloodline by marrying me—an ordinary woman from a working-class background.
