Chapter 3 - The Dinner of Reckoning

Friday night arrived with the ominous weight of a brewing storm. It was the night Gavin and his parents had invited me to the Buckhead residence for a final celebratory dinner before the wedding rehearsal scheduled for the weekend. They expected me to sign the corporate surrender documents over dessert, sealing my fate and saving their collapsing empire.
I arrived wearing a blood-red designer dress that commanded the room, my posture straight, my head held high. When I walked into the grand dining room, Naomi greeted me with a glowing, predatory smile, while Elijah raised his crystal glass of scotch in a silent toast to my impending doom.
"You look stunning, Alyssa," Naomi cooed, gesturing for me to sit at the long mahogany table. "And I trust you've reviewed the papers Gavin brought over? Family unity is built on smart financial foundations, my dear."
"I've looked at every single word, Naomi," I replied smoothly, taking my seat. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my voice remained as cold and steady as winter steel.
Gavin beamed from across the table, sliding a leather-bound folder toward me containing the final signature pages. "See, Mom? I told you she’s sensible. She knows what's best for our future."
"Let's eat first," I said, offering a tight, enigmatic smile. "I want us all to enjoy a very special meal tonight. A celebration of truths coming to light."
Throughout the dinner, the tension in the room was palpable, though Gavin and his parents misinterpreted my intense gaze as sentimental excitement. They laughed, clinked their glasses, and gloated about their social standing, entirely oblivious to the small blinking green light on the lapel brooch resting against my chest, broadcasting every word straight to Marcus Vance and a recording unit parked three blocks away.
As the maid cleared the main course, Naomi clapped her hands softly. "Now, darling. The papers?"
I didn't reach for the pen. Instead, I slowly reached into my handbag, pulled out my smartphone, and tapped the screen.
Instantly, a heavy, encrypted Bluetooth speaker I had hidden underneath the sideboard came to life.
The dining room filled with the chilling audio recording from the north stairwell weeks ago:
—Don’t go near Alyssa again... She’s our chance to get out of this debt.
—Once Alyssa signs, her company will belong to this family too. Then she’ll learn exactly what you did.
—Alyssa trusts me. As soon as we’re married, I’ll control her accounts.
The color drained from Gavin’s face in a fraction of a second. His fork slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against his porcelain plate. Elijah slammed his hands onto the table, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood floor.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Elijah thundered, his face turning a furious shade of purple.
Naomi’s aristocratic composure shattered instantly, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Alyssa—where did you—this is a malicious fabrication—"
"Is it, Naomi?" I asked, standing up slowly, towering over them with absolute authority. I tapped my phone again, and a second video file projected onto the smart-home television screen mounted on the dining room wall.

It was live surveillance footage from the hidden cameras Marcus’s team had installed around the estate earlier that day, combined with harrowing video clips Brianna had recorded using the burner phone—showing Naomi striking her with the switch, Elijah looking on with cold indifference, and Gavin laughing while counting out cash in the study.
The illusion of the cultured, respectable Herndon family was violently ripped apart in front of their own eyes.
