Chapter 5 - A New Dawn
Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the sparkling kitchen windows, casting a warm, golden glow across the newly cleaned floor. The shattered ceramic bowl was gone. The dark stains of the nightmare were washed away.
I stood by the stove, flipping pancakes, while the sound of soft laughter drifted down the hallway.
Clara walked into the kitchen, looking pale still, but with a vibrant, healthy color returning to her cheeks. Her steps were steady. In her arms, she carried Lily, who was wrapped in a brand-new set of pink pajamas, clutching a freshly washed and meticulously repaired Miss Button.
"Smells amazing, Daddy," Lily giggled, squirming out of Clara's arms and running over to wrap her small arms around my legs.
I knelt down, sweeping my daughter up into a tight, fierce embrace, pressing my face into her hair and breathing in the sweet scent of strawberry shampoo. I had never truly understood what it meant to nearly lose everything until I looked into the abyss. But looking at my family now, safe and whole, I knew we had survived the worst storm imaginable.
Clara walked over, resting a gentle hand on my shoulder. I stood up and pulled her into my arms, burying my face in her neck, holding her as though if I let go, she might vanish into a dream.
"How are you feeling today?" I whispered against her skin.
"Like the luckiest woman in the world," Clara smiled, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief. "We're safe, Michael. It's really over."
"It's over," I promised, kissing her forehead.
