Chapter 5 - The Queen’s Rescue

The shattering of glass echoed like a gunshot through the small clinic.
“Clear the rooms!” a harsh, guttural voice shouted from the lobby, followed by the metallic click of automatic rifles being readied.
Julian didn't flinch. His broad shoulders squared, his stance wide and balanced, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the narrow doorway of the examination room. He shifted slightly, keeping Camille completely shielded behind his massive frame.
“Stay down,” Julian murmured, his voice deadly calm without a trace of panic.
“I’m not hiding,” Camille whispered fiercely, reaching down to grab a heavy, stainless-steel medical tray off the counter. It wasn't much of a weapon, but she refused to cower.
Footsteps rushed down the hallway—heavy, rhythmic, closing in fast.
Suddenly, Dante burst back into the exam room from the side storage door, dragging a heavy metal oxygen tank. “Boss, the back alley is blocked! They’ve got snipers on the adjacent rooftops. We’re boxed in!”
Julian’s jaw tightened. They were trapped in a dead-end room with only one narrow exit.
“Drop your weapons! Now!” a voice barked from the doorway.
A man in black tactical gear stepped into the exam room, his assault rifle raised and aimed squarely at Julian’s chest. Behind him, two more armed mercenaries crowded the hallway, cutting off all escape.
Julian slowly lowered his pistol an inch, his eyes narrowing. “You’re working for Viktor Rossi.”
The mercenary laughed darkly, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. “The boss sends his regards, Moretti. Hand over the flash drive, and maybe we’ll make your execution quick.”
Julian’s hand drifted toward his inner jacket pocket. For a fraction of a second, the tension in the room reached a snapping point—the kind of explosive moment where a single breath could trigger a bloodbath.
Then, chaos erupted from an entirely unexpected direction.
With a frantic, enraged screech, the metal door of the cat carrier flew open.
Violet the Maine Coon—having somehow managed to unlatch the interior lock with her clever paws—exploded out of the carrier like a furry cannonball straight into the face of the leading mercenary.
“Ahhh! Get it off me!” the mercenary shrieked, dropping his rifle as sixteen pounds of pure, unadulterated feline fury latched onto his tactical helmet, claws digging furiously through his balaclava and hissing like a wildcat possessed.
The man stumbled backward, crashing violently into his partner in the narrow doorway.
“Now!” Julian roared.
In a blur of motion, Julian raised his firearm and fired two precise, deafening shots into the ceiling light fixtures, plunging the hallway into sudden, blinding darkness as sparks rained down.
Dante reacted instantly, heaving the heavy metal oxygen tank across the doorway and tripping the second mercenary, who hit the linoleum floor with a resounding crash.
Before the third man could recover, Julian closed the distance, delivering a devastating, brutal right hook that sent the mercenary crashing unconscious into the supply cabinets.
“Clear!” Dante shouted, kicking the rifle away from the fallen gunman.
The entire firefight had lasted less than six seconds.
Julian spun around, his chest heaving slightly, his dark eyes instantly searching for Camille. “Are you hurt?”
Camille stood frozen, still clutching the stainless-steel tray, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She looked at Julian, then down at Violet, who was calmly sitting on the chest of the unconscious mercenary, grooming her front paw as if she had just successfully swatted a fly.
“I’m... I’m fine,” Camille breathed out, her knees suddenly feeling weak.
Julian crossed the room in two strides, grabbing her by the shoulders and pulling her firmly against his chest, burying his face in her dark hair. For the first time all evening, the iron armor of the mafia boss completely cracked, revealing the raw, protective terror underneath.
“I thought...” Julian whispered against her ear, his voice trembling slightly. “I thought I lost you.”
Camille’s hands slid up, gripping the lapels of his charcoal suit, pulling him closer. “I’m right here, Julian. I’m right here.”
Epilogue: The Pride of the Morettis
Three weeks later, the clinic was back to normal—mostly.
The front glass had been replaced with reinforced, bullet-resistant panels courtesy of Julian Moretti’s private security firm. The local police had quietly dismissed the "burglary attempt" after a few well-placed phone calls from high-ranking city officials.
And the flash drive?
Once decrypted by Julian’s tech team, it didn't contain a ransom note or a trap. It contained encrypted financial records proving that Viktor Rossi—not the Morettis—had been embezzling syndicate funds and framing rival families to start a catastrophic gang war. Furthermore, it contained a digital video message from Elena Moretti herself, safely hidden in a secure monastery in Switzerland, explaining that she had run away voluntarily to escape the violence, and thanking her brother for uncovering the truth.
The war was averted. The Rossi syndicate collapsed under the weight of its own exposed corruption.
And at Hart Veterinary Clinic, business was booming.
The sun was shining brightly through the newly reinforced front windows as Camille walked down the central aisle, checking charts on her clipboard.
In the corner exam room, a familiar giant silver Maine Coon sat regally on the examination table, purring loudly as a tall, broad-shouldered man in a fitted black shirt gently scratched behind her ears.
Camille stepped into the room, leaning against the doorframe with a warm, amused smile. “You know, Mr. Moretti, your cat has become a terrible patient. She expects freeze-dried duck liver every single time she walks through that door.”
Julian looked up, his striking green eyes locking onto hers with an expression of pure, unreserved affection. He stood up, walking slowly across the room until he stood right in front of her, the cedarwood and espresso scent wrapping around her like home.
“Let her have her treats,” Julian murmured, reaching out to gently tuck a strand of dark hair behind her ear. “She’s the reason I found the most important person in my life.”
Camille tilted her head up, a playful glint in her eyes. “Is that so? And here I thought I was just the stubborn vet who refused to sedate your cat.”
May you like
Julian smiled—that rare, devastatingly handsome smile that still made her breath hitch—and pulled her gently into his arms.
“You were so much more than that, Camille,” he whispered, lowering his lips to hers. “You were the only one brave enough to tame us both.”
