Chapter 4 - Blood, Steel, and Paternity

The safehouse was located deep within the heavily fortified private estate on the northern cliffs overlooking the churning black ocean. It was a fortress of reinforced concrete, bulletproof glass, and state-of-the-art biometric security, patrolled by dozen-man tactical units.
Yet, inside the master suite, the atmosphere was thick with an entirely different kind of tension.
Astrid sat on the edge of a massive velvet armchair, watching as a private medical team packed up their specialized diagnostic equipment. A high-resolution fetal ultrasound machine hummed softly in the corner of the room, its screen dark.
Raphael stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the stormy night, his posture rigid as a statue carved from granite. He hadn’t spoken a word since they arrived forty-eight minutes ago. The weight of an impending gang war rested entirely on his shoulders, compounded by the agonizing uncertainty of the test they had just performed.
The senior physician, an older doctor with silver hair and a calm demeanor, walked over to Raphael, holding a sealed manila folder.
"Mr. Hoffman," the doctor said quietly. "The genetic markers, paternity sequencing, and viability panels are complete."
Raphael turned slowly from the window. His face was a mask of stoic control, but his knuckles were white where he gripped the wooden window frame. He didn't ask; he simply stared at the folder, paralyzed by the fear of the answer.
Astrid stood up, her heart pounding against her ribs. "Well?" she demanded, stepping between them. "What do the results say?"
The doctor offered a faint, reassuring smile. "The DNA sequencing is conclusive. The child is ninety-nine point nine percent yours, Mr. Hoffman. Furthermore, despite your historical medical profile, your biological markers show a full, permanent cellular recovery. The child is entirely healthy, developing normally, and thriving."
The silence in the room stretched so tautly it felt like a stretched guitar string.
Raphael exhaled—a long, shuddering breath that seemed to expel years of accumulated darkness from his soul. He took two long strides forward, stopping inches from Astrid. His gray eyes were shimmering with an emotion she had never seen there before: raw, unadulterated vulnerability.
"Mine," he murmured, his voice cracking slightly. He dropped to one knee before her, his large hands hovering hesitantly over her stomach before gently resting against the soft fabric of her sweater. "Our child."
Astrid looked down at him, her throat tightening. All the anger, all the resentment, all the cold stone she had built around her heart over the past three months began to melt away under the fierce heat of his touch.
"You were wrong to doubt me, Raphael," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"I know," he replied, looking up at her with profound reverence. "I was a monster wrapped in fear. But I swear to you, Astrid Becker—on my life, on my soul—no one will ever touch you. No one will ever threaten this child. I will tear Viktor and his entire empire down to ash before I let anyone take my family from me."
Before Astrid could respond, a sharp, urgent knock rattled the heavy oak door of the suite.
Klaus Fischer entered without waiting for permission, his face grim, a tactical tablet clutched in his massive hand. "Boss. Viktor’s advance unit just made a move on our southern docks. They’re trying to draw us out."
Raphael rose instantly, the vulnerable man vanishing in a fraction of a second, replaced once more by the ruthless mafia syndicate kingpin. But before he turned toward the door, he looked back at Astrid.
"Stay inside the perimeter," he commanded softly, cupping her cheek with one hand. "I’ll be back before dawn. And when I return, this war will be over."
"Be careful," Astrid whispered, catching his wrist.
A rare, fierce smile touched the corners of Raphael’s mouth. "I have everything worth living for now. I’m not going anywhere."

As Raphael swept out of the room followed by Klaus and his tactical detail, Astrid stood by the window, watching the armored convoys roll out into the stormy night. The battle for their future had begun. But as she placed her hand over Raphael's warm imprint on her stomach, she knew the outcome.
The mafia boss had destroyed her ultrasound out of fear three months ago. Tonight, he was going to burn an empire down to protect it.
