Chapter 5 - Dawn and Deliverance

The explosion at the front gates sounded like rolling thunder, shaking the reinforced glass of the grand foyer and sending a cloud of white dust billowing through the marble halls.

They came through the breach in a synchronized wedge formation—twelve heavily armed operatives in reinforced ballistic gear, moving with ruthless, disciplined efficiency. They thought they were walking into a sleepy estate guarded by panicked mobsters.

Instead, they walked into a slaughterhouse.

From the second-floor balcony, Elias opened fire with suppressive, heavy-caliber bursts, pinning the lead element behind the marble pillars of the entryway. The sound of gunfire echoed off the vaulted ceilings like rolling artillery.

At the same time, from the shadows of the west wing corridor, Marin moved like a phantom. She didn't waste ammunition. Every shot was placed with cold, surgical precision—taking out comms arrays, disabling knee joints, and neutralizing threats before they even knew where the fire was coming from.

She dropped from the ceiling rafters directly behind the rear guard, locking her forearm around his throat in a brutal chokehold that put him out before his boots touched the floor.

Within three minutes, the entire assault team was neutralized—scattered across the marble floor, disarmed, and bound with industrial zip-ties courtesy of Marcus and his elite security detail.

The smoke from the flash-bangs slowly drifted out through the shattered front windows as the pale, golden light of dawn began to break over the ocean horizon.

Elias walked down the grand staircase, his boots crunching on shattered glass, his rifle hanging casually from one hand. He stopped at the center of the foyer, looking down at the team leader of the captured black-ops squad, who was groaning against a pillar.

Then he looked up.

Standing on the landing above, leaning calmly against the banister with a fresh cup of coffee in her hand, was Marin. Her scrubs were stained with a bit of soot, but her expression was as serene as it had been when she was reading the obituaries to Adelaide the night before.

Elias walked up the stairs, stopping two steps below her. He looked up into those striking hazel eyes, the adrenaline slowly fading from his veins, leaving behind something entirely new and entirely unfamiliar.

"Well," Elias said, a slow, genuine smile breaking across his hardened face. "Your shift officially ended ten minutes ago."

Marin took a slow sip of her coffee, looking down at the chaos of the foyer before meeting his gaze once more.

"Looks like I'm going to need to log some serious overtime," Marin replied, her lips curving into a warm, confident smile.

Elias reached up, gently taking the empty coffee cup from her hand and setting it on the windowsill, before taking her hand in his. The calloused, scarred hands of a mafia king meeting the steady, capable hands of a woman who saved lives—and ended them just as easily.

"Stay," Elias said quietly, the command softening into something closer to a plea. "Name your price. Double. Triple. Whatever you want."

Marin tilted her head, her smile turning teasing. "Twenty-eight dollars an hour, Mr. Ferrante. Not a cent more. But... I do demand dental benefits."

Elias laughed—a deep, resonant sound that echoed through the grand estate as the sun finally broke fully over the ocean, washing away the shadows of the night.
