Chapter 14 - Vanessa’s Last PerformanceGabriel did not go upstairs alone.

Vanessa had expected him to. That was her first mistake.

She had built her power by understanding people’s weaknesses: Gabriel’s grief, Victor’s loyalty, Calvin’s cowardice, Kell’s greed, Sofia’s fear. She knew which words opened which wounds. She knew Gabriel would hear Lucia’s name and move like a man dragged by a hook.

But she had not accounted for Evelyn Hart standing in front of him.

“No,” Evelyn said.

Gabriel looked at her as if the word had physically stopped him.

Vanessa’s voice continued from the monitor. “Do not make me wait. I dislike repeating myself.”

Evelyn turned to Detective Harris. “Can she see us?”

Harris checked the system. “No. She hacked the feed output, not input. I think.”

“You think?”

“I am a detective, not a wizard.”

Rosa muttered, “Finally, honesty from law enforcement.”

Under other circumstances, Evelyn might have laughed.

Gabriel’s eyes stayed on the screen. Vanessa sat in Lucia’s room like a queen in a stolen chapel. The yellow blanket lay across her lap. Behind her, the wardrobe stood open, revealing the tunnel door.

“She came back through the tunnels,” Evelyn said.

Gabriel nodded. “Or never left.”

Sofia stood near Titan, pale and furious. “That is Mama’s blanket.”

Evelyn crouched. “Do you want to stay downstairs with Rosa?”

“No.”

“Sofia—”

“She used my room. She used Mama’s things. I want to see her lose.”

The words were too old for her small voice.

Gabriel heard it and looked devastated.

Detective Harris organized quickly. Officers would approach from the west staircase and servants’ passage. Gabriel insisted on going through the main corridor. Evelyn insisted on coming because Titan refused to leave her and Sofia refused to leave Titan.

No one liked the arrangement.

No one had a better one.

They moved through the house in tense silence.

At the velvet rope, Gabriel stopped. He looked down at Sofia.

“You stay behind me.”

Sofia looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn said, “Behind both of us.”

That, the child accepted.

Lucia’s door stood open.

Vanessa sat exactly as she had on the monitor.

She smiled when they entered.

“Oh good. You brought the entire emotional support staff.”

Titan’s growl rolled through the room.

Vanessa’s eyes flicked to him. “Still alive. Remarkable.”

Gabriel stepped forward. “It is over.”

Vanessa laughed. “Powerful men always say that when they are tired of being embarrassed.”

Detective Harris aimed her weapon. “Hands visible.”

Vanessa lifted both hands gracefully. No gun.

Evelyn did not relax.

Vanessa noticed. “You are learning.”

“From bad examples,” Evelyn said.

The smile vanished.

Vanessa looked at Sofia. “You have grown.”

Sofia pressed closer to Titan. “You said I was ugly.”

Gabriel’s face darkened.

Vanessa shrugged. “Children remember such useless things.”

“They remember who hurt them,” Evelyn said.

Vanessa’s gaze snapped to her. “And what do you remember, Evelyn? Martin Kell’s hands around your throat? The judge calling you confused? The women at the shelter telling you to start over somewhere else? You think standing near Gabriel Romano makes you safe?”

Evelyn’s body went cold.

Gabriel turned slightly. “Do not speak to her.”

Vanessa smiled. “There he is. The protector. Always late, but dramatic once he arrives.”

Sofia shouted, “Stop it!”

Everyone froze.

The child stepped forward before Evelyn could stop her.

“You lied,” Sofia said. “You said Uncle Gabriel hated me. You said Titan would forget me. You said Mama was bad.”

Vanessa tilted her head. “Your mother was bad.”

Gabriel moved, but Evelyn caught his sleeve.

Vanessa continued, eyes fixed on Sofia. “Lucia signed the first contract. She gave us names. She invited us into this family. She only grew a conscience when she realized evil looks different holding your own baby.”

Sofia trembled.

Evelyn stepped beside her. “That means her mother changed.”

Vanessa sneered. “That means her mother was weak.”

“No,” Sofia whispered.

Then louder.

“No.”

Titan barked once, as if agreeing.

Vanessa’s nostrils flared. She reached beneath the blanket.

Evelyn had been waiting for it.

She threw herself sideways, knocking Sofia behind the bed as Vanessa pulled a small pistol from the folds of yellow cloth.

Gabriel fired first.

Not at Vanessa.

At the chandelier chain above her.

The old iron fixture crashed down between Vanessa and the others, exploding glass across the floor. Vanessa screamed and stumbled back. Detective Harris and the officers rushed in.

Vanessa tried to run toward the tunnel.

Titan blocked the door.

For the first time, Vanessa Sterling had nowhere elegant to stand.

Harris forced her to the floor and cuffed her hard enough to make her gasp.

“This is harassment,” Vanessa spat.

“No,” Harris said. “This is Tuesday in a house full of evidence.”

“It is Wednesday,” Rosa called from the corridor.

Harris sighed. “Thank you, Rosa.”

Evelyn sat on the floor with Sofia shaking in her arms. Gabriel knelt near them, not touching until Sofia reached out.

“She lied,” Sofia sobbed.

Gabriel’s voice broke. “Yes.”

“About Mama?”

“About the part that mattered.”

“What part mattered?”

Gabriel looked at Evelyn, then at the broken music box on Lucia’s dresser.

“That your mother tried to save you,” he said. “And because she tried, you are here.”

Vanessa laughed from the floor. “Enjoy your touching scene. Victor is already selling the real ledger.”

Gabriel looked at her.

May you like

Vanessa smiled through blood on her lip.

“You caught the actress,” she whispered. “Not the theater.”
