Chapter 2 - The Audit of Power

The private dining alcove at the back of the Obsidian Room offered a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline, far removed from the common dining area where the minor spectacle had just occurred. At the center of the dark walnut table sat a heavy leather portfolio, its brass clasps gleaming under the soft glow of a designer Edison bulb.

Khloe sat across from Victor Russo, her posture straight and composed. The adrenaline from the encounter with Liam had fully receded, replaced by the familiar, comforting rhythm of data and analysis. Before her lay three thick spreadsheets detailing international shipping routes, customs declarations, and warehouse inventories for Russo Global Imports.

"The numbers in sector four don't add up," Khloe said, her pen tapping rhythmically against the margin of page twelve. She didn't hesitate or soften her critique, despite the three heavily armed men standing in rigid silence around the perimeter of the room. To Khloe, numbers were truth, and truth cared nothing for titles or reputations.

Victor swirled amber liquid in his crystal glass, watching her with an intensity that would have unnerved anyone else. "Explain."

"Your logistics partner in Rotterdam is padding the inventory costs by roughly fourteen percent," Khloe stated matter-of-factly, turning the ledger so Victor could see her annotations. She pointed to a highlighted row of figures. "They’re listing specialized container maintenance fees under routine port handling. It’s a classic shell game. They assume a company of your scale won't audit line items below fifty thousand dollars."

Victor leaned forward, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. He studied the spreadsheet, then looked up at Khloe. A slow, appreciative smirk played across his lips. "And what would you recommend we do with our Rotterdam partner, Ms. Hayes?"

"Fire them," Khloe said without missing a beat. "Then sue them for breach of contract to recover the variance. If you let fourteen percent slide today, they’ll be siphoning thirty percent by next quarter. Weakness invites exploitation."

One of Victor’s senior lieutenants, a scarred man named Dante who stood near the doorway, stiffened at her bluntness. But Victor simply threw his head back and let out a deep, resonant laugh.

"You see, Dante?" Victor said, gesturing toward Khloe with his glass. "That is why I prefer intelligence over intimidation. Most people sit in this room and tremble. You sit here and reconstruct my balance sheet."

"I am simply doing my job, Mr. Russo," Khloe replied, though a faint blush warmed her cheeks. "Though I should mention that my firm’s contract with your corporation strictly covers standard compliance auditing. Forensic investigation of fraudulent partners falls outside my current pay grade."

Victor raised an eyebrow. "Are you negotiating a raise, Ms. Hayes?"

"I am stating a professional boundary," she corrected gently, meeting his gaze head-on. "I value my job, and I value my sanity. Dealing with international shipping discrepancies is stressful enough without getting entangled in corporate espionage."

"Corporate espionage is a harsh term for routine business disputes," Victor murmured, setting his glass down. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a heavy, cream-colored envelope, sliding it across the polished wood toward her.

Khloe looked at the envelope with mild suspicion. "What is this?"

"An offer," Victor said simply. "Your current employer undervalues your talent. They pay you a mid-level manager’s salary while you do the work of a chief financial officer. I am offering you a position as the head of internal logistics and compliance for Russo Global. Triple your current salary, complete autonomy over your department, and a security detail that ensures no one—charming ex-boyfriends included—will ever interrupt your dinner again."

Khloe stared at the envelope. The numbers she had dreamed about—rent paid six months in advance, zero credit card debt, the ability to breathe without calculating the cost of groceries—were sitting right there inside that thick paper.

Yet, caution urged her to hesitate. "Mr. Russo, your business dealings are... complicated. I’m a corporate accountant, not a criminal defense attorney."

"I am a legitimate businessman, Khloe," Victor said, using her first name for the first time, his voice dropping to a smooth, hypnotic register. "We move goods across borders. Sometimes the borders are difficult. We simply need someone who understands the truth hidden beneath the paper trail. You don't need to look at what's in the shadows. Just keep the light shining on the numbers."

Khloe looked at the envelope, then at the man who had effortlessly silenced an entire restaurant with a single glance and a glass of scotch. Her apartment was cold, her bank account was pitiful, and Liam knew where she lived.

Slowly, Khloe reached out her manicured hand and pulled the envelope toward her.

"When do I start?" she asked.
