Chapter 4 - THE SECOND PAPER

Bianca did not answer.
That told Adriano enough to make the room suddenly dangerous.
Alina requested her phone. Bianca refused. Company counsel intervened, explaining that security would preserve relevant devices until appropriate legal process could be obtained.
Bianca looked at Adriano.
“Do something.”
For eight months, those words had probably been enough to make him move.
Not anymore.
He stared at her.
“What was Victor buying?”
“Nothing.”
“You heard yourself come into this room asking about the transfer.”
“It wasn’t like that.”
Bella almost closed her eyes.
It wasn’t like that.
People always reached for those words when the truth had become too ugly to defend.
Adriano stepped closer.
“Why Reeve?”
Bianca glanced toward Matteo, then the board.
“I’m not discussing this here.”
“You discussed my trust with Victor.”
“Adriano.”
“What did you give him?”
Nothing.
His voice became quieter.
“Bianca.”
She still did not answer.
“What. Did. You. Give. Victor?”
“Forecasts.”
Daniel Russo inhaled sharply.
Adriano went completely still.
“What forecasts?”
“Port projections.”
“Pier Nine?”
Bianca looked away.
That was enough.
Adriano’s face turned white.
“You gave Victor Reeve internal Pier Nine forecasts?”
“He said he could guarantee the acquisition if we gave him visibility.”
“We?”
Bianca’s voice became desperate. “I was helping you.”
“You were helping me by giving my biggest competitor internal projections?”
“You wanted Pier Nine!”
“So you sold him my numbers?”
“No!”
“Then explain what you did.”
Her anger finally broke through.
“You think I enjoyed waiting around while you decided whether you could leave your pregnant wife?”
Bella recoiled.
Adriano’s head snapped toward her.
Guilt crossed his face.
Bianca kept going.
“You told me we were building something.”
“With Victor?”
“He had leverage.”
“What leverage?”
Alina answered before Bianca could.
“Eight million dollars.”
She had been studying the transfer packet.
“This isn’t an ordinary investment allocation.”
Adriano turned toward her.
“What is it?”
“A performance deposit.”
Matteo rose from his chair.
The entire room went silent.
“For what?”
Alina’s expression hardened.
“An exclusive option agreement connected to Moretti Atlantic’s Pier Nine subsidiary.”
Adriano stared.
“I never authorized an option.”
“The authorization packet you approved last week includes an incorporated schedule.”
“I read it.”
“Apparently not closely enough.”
Bella felt cold.
Adriano thinks authority means ownership.
She had written those words weeks ago.
He had also begun believing authority meant he no longer needed to read anything carefully.
Matteo walked toward his son.
“Eight million from the trust would activate an option giving Victor Reeve preferential acquisition rights if Moretti Atlantic failed specified financing conditions.”
“What conditions?”
Daniel answered.
“The conditions triggered by removing eight million from the collateral pool.”
Silence.
Bella understood before Adriano did.
Drain the trust reserve.
Trigger the shortfall.
Activate Victor’s option.
Use Adriano’s own authorization to make all three happen.
Bianca whispered, “I didn’t know that part.”
Adriano turned toward her.
“You expect me to believe you?”
“I knew Victor wanted access. I knew he wanted the transfer. I didn’t know it triggered the covenant.”
Bella looked at Alina.
“Why would Victor pay her?”
Bianca froze.
Adriano heard the word.
“Pay?”
Alina flipped through the schedules more quickly.
Then stopped.
“There.”
She turned the page.
BIANCA RICCI — SUCCESS FEE: $1,500,000 UPON TRANSACTION COMPLETION.
Adriano’s face lost all color.
Bianca stepped backward.
“Adriano.”
“You were getting paid.”
“I was leaving.”
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Nobody moved.
Adriano stared at her.
“What?”
Bianca covered her mouth.
Too late.
“You were leaving me?”
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“Victor offered me a way out.”
Adriano laughed softly.
It was the saddest sound Bella had heard from him in years.
She expected satisfaction.
There was none.
She watched the man who destroyed their marriage for Bianca discover that Bianca had also been planning an escape.
He looked suddenly smaller.
Bianca turned toward Bella, defensive and furious.
“Don’t look at me like you’re better. He lied to both of us.”
Bella stared at her.
“No.”
Bianca blinked.
“My husband lied to me.”
Bella pointed toward her.
“You knew he was married.”
Silence.
“You knew I was pregnant.”
Bianca lowered her eyes.
“You knew about the miscarriages.”
That was the part Bella could barely say.
Bianca’s face changed.
Bella placed one hand over her son.
“You don’t get to stand in the wreckage you helped create and pretend we were deceived in the same way.”
Then Bella looked at Adriano.
“And neither do you.”
His eyes rose.
“You don’t get to make Bianca the explanation for what you did. She didn’t miss our appointments. She didn’t lie to me from our bed. She didn’t put her hand on our son and ask how he was doing while planning another night with someone else.”
Adriano’s face broke.
There was nowhere left to put the blame.
Matteo returned to the table and pushed another document toward him.
Adriano looked down.
NOTICE OF PERMANENT REMOVAL OF MANAGING TRUSTEE.
“You already signed this.”
“I signed the emergency suspension,” Matteo said.
“This says permanent.”
“Yes.”
“You’re removing me from the trust.”
“Yes.”
“I’m chairman of Moretti Atlantic.”
“For the next several minutes.”
Adriano’s eyes lifted.
Matteo slid another document beside the first.
BOARD RESOLUTION FOR IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION OF CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY PENDING INVESTIGATION.
Adriano stared at both pages.
Bella did too.
She had known Matteo intended to protect the company.
She had not known the full board mechanism was already waiting.
Adriano looked at her.
“You knew?”
“Not all of it.”
“Did you plan this?”
“No.”
“Then why are you sitting here?”
Bella’s eyes filled.
“Because our son was inside the trust you treated like your wallet.”
Adriano looked toward the divorce envelope.
Then the trustee removal.
Then the board resolution.
Three documents.
Only one carried Bella’s signature.
His voice came out raw.
“You took everything.”
Bella stared at him.
“No.”
He looked up.
“You keep saying things like that because you still don’t understand.”
Her hand rested over their son.
“I took myself.”
May you like
She swallowed.
“The rest disappeared when everyone finally stopped pretending it belonged to you.”
