Chapter 4 - The Grand Meridian Gala

The Grand Meridian Hotel was a masterpiece of old-world architecture and modern criminal funding. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, casting a brilliant, warm glow over hundreds of wealthy socialites, politicians, and underworld figures draped in diamonds and designer gowns.

Nevie stood near the grand staircase wearing a borrowed emerald-green evening dress that fit her like a glove—a parting gift from a friendly stylist she had befriended during her college days, which she had kept locked away for a moment she thought would never come. She didn't look like a waitress tonight. She looked like she belonged in the room.

Her phone buzzed in her clutch. A text message from an unknown number: Table 12. Balcony level. Enjoy the show.

Nevie looked up toward the VIP balcony overlooking the ballroom. There sat Stella Perry, surrounded by a group of high-society women who were laughing at her every word, though their eyes held the hollow, fearful obedience of people walking through a minefield.

As Nevie made her way up the marble stairs, she noticed Stella cornering a young, nervous woman—evidently the daughter of a rival syndicate boss whom the Perrys were currently attempting to absorb. Stella was holding a glass of deep red Cabernet Sauvignon, her voice carrying across the balcony with deliberate cruelty.

"Oh, darling, where did you get that dress?" Stella sneered, swirling the wine dangerously close to the girl's white silk gown. "It looks like something my grandmother would wear to a funeral. Actually, no, my grandmother had better taste when she was blindfolded."

The young woman flushed, tears welling in her eyes as she tried to back away. "I—excuse me, Miss Perry..."

"Don't walk away when I'm speaking to you!" Stella snapped, her voice rising in shrill triumph as she noticed the surrounding crowd watching her performance. "People like you think you can just waltz into our circles because your father bought a couple of shipping docks. You have no class. You have no pedigree. You're just a prop!"

The cruel irony of the words hung in the air. Stella was repeating the exact same script she had used on Nevie the night before, desperate to recreate her moment of dominance.

"Leaving so soon, Stella?"

The smooth, calm voice cut through the balcony like a glass cutter.

Stella froze. Every head on the balcony turned.

Leandro stood at the top of the stairs, and right beside him, walking with absolute, unshakeable poise, was Nevie Brown.

The room seemed to collectively gasp. The socialites stared in stunned disbelief at the former waitress, noting the expensive dress, the sharp, intelligent glint in her eyes, and, most importantly, the fact that Leandro Perry was escorting her by the arm.

Stella’s face drained of all color. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "What... what is she doing here? Leandro, have you lost your mind? That's a waitress from Laura!"

"She was a waitress, Stella," Leandro corrected gently, his eyes fixed on his sister with a terrifying, icy detachment. "Now, she is the new Chief Operations Officer of our entire hotel and hospitality division. And you are making a scene in front of our most important business partners."

"You... you hired her?!" Stella shrieked, losing whatever fragile grip she had on her composure. "You brought a common restaurant worker into our family business?! Have you completely disgraced our name?!"

Nevie stepped forward, breaking away from Leandro’s arm. She walked right up to Stella, standing tall, her eyes locking onto the trembling woman with absolute, unshakable clarity.
