Chapter 5 - A New Foundation

Three months later, the spring sun was finally melting the last stubborn patches of snow along the Rhode Island coastline.
Falcone House looked completely different.
Outside, landscaping crews had finally planted bright rows of white hydrangeas and blooming cherry trees along the iron gates. Inside, the heavy, oppressive darkness had been lifted; the windows were washed clean, letting the brilliant Atlantic sunlight flood the grand hallways.
In the master study on the second floor, Roman Falcone sat behind his mahogany desk, reviewing financial statements. But instead of the usual stack of illicit supply chain reports, the top document was a fully paid, zero-balance medical account statement from Boston Children’s Hospital, alongside a college acceptance letter for a nursing program in Chloe Carter’s name.
The heavy double oak doors pushed open without a knock.
Maeve walked in, wearing a sharp, professional navy blazer over a silk blouse, holding a sleek tablet in her hand. She wasn't holding a cleaning rag or a vacuum hose anymore. Following a quiet restructuring of the estate’s corporate holdings—and a very firm ultimatum delivered by Maeve to all three brothers regarding their lifestyle choices—she had been officially promoted to Chief Estate Director and Operations Manager.
“The new security detail has arrived for review,” Maeve announced crisply, tapping her tablet. “And Declan is downstairs trying to feed your new rescue dog a slice of pepperoni pizza against my explicit nutritional instructions.”
Roman leaned back in his leather chair, a genuine, relaxed smile touching the corners of his mouth—a smile that no rival boss or terrified associate had ever been privileged to see.
“I’ll go handle Declan,” Roman said softly, standing up from his desk. He walked around the mahogany barrier and stopped just a foot away from her. “Though I have to admit... I still miss the days when you used to threaten to make us scrub the floors with toothbrushes.”
Maeve crossed her arms, looking up at him with a familiar, sharp glint in her dark eyes.
“Don't tempt me, Mr. Falcone. Just because I’m the director now doesn't mean I forgot where the cleaning supplies are kept.”
Gabriel and Declan appeared in the doorway just then, both laughing as they hauled in a massive bouquet of fresh spring flowers for the foyer. The dark, brooding shadows that had once choked the life out of Falcone House were gone, replaced by the chaotic, vibrant warmth of a real home.
Maeve looked at the three men who had once terrified the entire East Coast—the triplets who thought no nanny could survive forty-eight hours with them.

She hadn't just survived them. She had broken them down, built them back up, and taught them how to sit down, eat, and finally live.
And as Roman gently reached out, taking her hand in his with a quiet, abiding reverence, Maeve knew she had finally found a place where she didn't have to be afraid ever again.
