Chapter 5 - A New Christmas Eve

One year later.
The snow was falling thick and heavy once again over downtown Chicago, painting the city in a blanket of pristine, magical white. But inside the newly rebuilt Nocturne Club, the atmosphere was warm, vibrant, and filled with the smooth, soulful melodies of a live jazz band playing in the corner.
The club had been entirely redesigned—sleek, modern, yet keeping its timeless, classic soul. Booth seven was still reserved, but tonight, it wasn't empty.
I sat across the polished mahogany table, wearing a brand-new emerald-green silk dress that cost more than my entire first year of college. The air smelled of roasted chestnuts, fine Italian wine, and the faint, familiar scent of Adrian’s cedarwood cologne.
Adrian sat opposite me, pouring steaming black tea from a silver pot into delicate china cups. Around his neck, resting against his dark cashmere sweater, hung a new silver chain holding the restored locket—its glass replaced, polished to a brilliant shine, the lark catching the ambient candlelight.
"You know," I said, taking a sip of my tea and smiling across the table, "technically, you never paid me for that fourteen-dollar thrift store coat."
Adrian raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk touching the corner of his lips. He reached across the table, sliding a small, elegantly wrapped velvet box toward me.
"Consider it an investment," he replied softly. "After all, buying that coat bought me my life back. And it brought you into it."

My heart fluttered as I picked up the box and popped open the lid. Inside rested a delicate, custom-crafted diamond pendant shaped like a tiny, soaring lark, glittering brilliantly under the restaurant lights.
Across the room, Nolan raised his glass to us from the bar, while outside, the Chicago snow continued to fall, burying the dark ghosts of the past forever under a blanket of new beginnings. Adrian reached across the table, his warm fingers entangling with mine, and for the first time in my life, on Christmas Eve, I knew I was exactly where I belonged.
