Chapter 3 - The First Domino

Two days later, the trap began to close.

In small towns, power relies entirely on momentum. People obey the sheriff not because he has legal authority, but because they believe no one can touch him. Break that illusion, and the entire structure collapses like a house built on dry mud.

Rachel had spent the morning preparing for the charity gala at the country club, frantically ironing dresses and talking on the phone about catering arrangements with the mayor’s wife. She barely spoke to me, treating me like an embarrassing appliance she couldn't return to the hardware store.

"Ethan, if you come tonight, at least wear the blazer I bought you," she said, standing by the hallway mirror and adjusting her pearl necklace. "And please, whatever you do, do not mention the diner incident to anyone. Travis has already apologized to the mayor, saying it was just a harmless joke gone wrong."

"A harmless joke," I repeated quietly, wiping grease from my hands with a shop rag. "Right."

"Don't use that tone with me. You chose this quiet life. Act like it." She grabbed her designer handbag and walked out the door, her luxury SUV kicking up gravel down the long driveway.

Ten minutes later, my satellite phone vibrated on the workbench in the shed.

It was Vance.

“Commander, we have the initial packet on Cole and his inner circle. It’s worse than you thought. The county expansion grants for the new highway bypass weren't just mismanaged—they were embezzled through a shell company registered in his brother's name. Furthermore, federal environmental funds meant for Yellowstone river cleanup were diverted to pave private logging roads for the timber mill. We’ve already routed the transaction ledgers, wire transfers, and tax evasion records directly to the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the Montana Attorney General's Office.”

I smiled faintly, scrolling through the decrypted PDF attachments appearing on my monitor. “And the federal judge?”

“Arthur Cole? Federal ethics violations are already being drafted. His office has dismissed or buried twenty-two DUI and drug-trafficking charges against Travis’s deputies and local business donors over the past four years. The DOJ Inspector General has been briefed. Federal marshals are already mobilizing teams out of Billings.”

“Don't let them move yet,” I replied, my fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. “Let’s hit the local level first. I want the town council to see it coming before the feds kick his front door in.”

“Understood, boss. What’s your play for tonight?”

“The charity gala at the country club. Rachel’s there. The whole county leadership is gathering to praise Travis Cole for his stellar public service. I think it’s time for a toast.”
