Chapter 5 - The Truth Revealed and the Final Sunset

The heavy steel reinforced door of the penthouse suite exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood and flying drywall dust.
Smoke grenades hissed as they rolled across the marble foyer floor, filling the suite with thick, blinding white smoke.
“Get behind the structural marble pillar!” Silas ordered, grabbing my arm and shoving me bodily behind the massive support column in the center of the living room.
Gunfire erupted instantly. The air filled with the deafening crack of automatic weapons fire. Glass shattered in a cascading waterfall as windows blew outward under the barrage.
Silas returned fire with chilling precision, dropping two masked mercenaries who tried to breach the foyer through the smoke. But more kept pouring in from the private service stairwell—men sent by Marcus Vance, the ruthless syndicate boss who wanted to usurp the Carbone empire.
“Mave, take this!” Silas shouted over the roaring gunfire, shoving a spare compact Glock into my hand. “Cover the western corridor!”
I didn't hesitate. I pressed my back against the wall, raised the weapon, and fired two warning shots down the dark hallway as a shadow lunged toward me, forcing him to dive behind a sofa.
Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the lower levels of the hotel, shaking the entire building on its foundations. The main elevator shaft collapsed with a thunderous roar, cutting off the attackers' reinforcements in one decisive stroke.
Silas seized the opening. With blinding speed, he flanked the remaining three intruders in the living room, disarming the leader with a brutal roundhouse kick that shattered his jaw and pinning the others to the floor at gunpoint.
Silence descended over the smoking penthouse suite, broken only by the crackle of distant flames and the hiss of the sprinkler system.
Sirens wailed far below in the Manhattan streets—dozens of them, accompanied by flashing red and blue lights that illuminated the ruined glass walls.
Silas walked slowly back toward me through the haze of smoke, his shirt torn, his knuckles bloodied, but his eyes locked entirely on mine.
He dropped his weapon onto a coffee table and stopped two feet away.
“The federal indictment against Vance is already being transmitted to the District Attorney’s office,” Silas said, his breathing heavy. “By sunrise, his syndicate will be dismantled, and my public exposure will be handled by my legal team. The marriage to Vivien... we filed for a formal, public annulment three hours ago while she was safely in surgery for her recurring heart condition. It will be finalized by the end of the week.”
I stared at him, lowering the Glock slowly to my side.
“You did all of that tonight?”
“I should have done it four years ago,” Silas said quietly, dropping to one knee right in front of me on the shattered glass and smoke-stained carpet.
He didn't pull out a velvet ring box. He didn't offer a polished, rehearsed corporate speech. He just looked up at me with raw, unapologetic vulnerability, laying his bleeding hands open on his knees.
“I lied to protect you from a war I was already fighting,” he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “I was a coward because I couldn't bear the thought of losing you to my world. But I am laying every single piece of my life at your feet right now, Mave. You can walk away, and I will make damn sure nobody ever touches you again... or you can stay, and we build something real in the light.”
The morning sun finally crested over the jagged East River skyscrapers, piercing through the shattered penthouse windows and casting a warm, golden glow across the room.
I looked down at the man who had terrified me, infuriated me, and broken my heart—yet who had bled out in an alley and stood in the line of fire just to keep me breathing.
Slowly, I knelt down on the floor in front of him.
I dropped the gun, reached out, and rested my hand gently against his bruised, stubborn jaw.

“If you ever lie to me again, Silas,” I whispered, a faint, undeniable smile tugging at the corners of my mouth, “I won't just bite your hand. I’ll run the whole empire without you.”
Silas let out a deep, ragged breath that sounded like a prayer, leaning his forehead against mine as the sirens faded into the morning light.
