Chapter 1 - The Bread Thief in the Shadows

The digital clock on the sleek, obsidian nightstand blinked 4:52 AM, cutting through the heavy darkness of Elias Baron’s sprawling North End estate. In most households, this hour belonged to absolute stillness, a quiet interlude before the city outside breathed its first waking sighs. But Elias Baron did not sleep like ordinary men. Empires were not built on eight hours of undisturbed slumber, and a man whose name was whispered with a mixture of terror and reverence across the eastern seaboard did not survive by letting his guard down.

Elias stood barefoot on the imported French parquet flooring of his private mezzanine, a glass of dark amber whiskey resting loosely in his hand. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, he looked down into the cavernous, professional-grade kitchen that spanned the lower level of the east wing. The marble countertops gleamed under the faint ambient glow of recessed lighting, reflecting a scene that made his razor-sharp instincts instantly snap to attention.

A figure moved near the massive walk-in pantry.

It was Adeline Hayes.

She had been working as a night maid at the Baron estate for a little over six weeks, brought in during a routine expansion of the household staff. On paper, her references were clean, her background quiet, and her work ethic borderline obsessive. She took shifts no one else wanted, cleaned corners others ignored, and kept her head down with the quiet desperation of someone who desperately needed the paycheck.

Yet, as Elias watched from the shadows above, Adeline did something that shattered the immaculate facade of her employment.

She reached into the commercial-grade bread box, pulled out half a loaf of artisanal sourdough wrapped in butcher’s paper, and slid it quietly into a plain paper grocery bag resting on the counter. Her movements were practiced, almost guilty, her shoulders hunched as if expecting a sudden shout from the dark.

Elias took a slow sip of his whiskey, the burning liquid sliding down his throat as his mind raced. Rourke Delaney, his seasoned security adviser and head of intelligence, had placed Adeline on the watchlist just three days prior. Intelligence reports indicated that cargo routes from three Baron-controlled warehouses had experienced unprecedented leaks over the last two months—leaks that had allowed rival syndicate boss Cormac Haverin to intercept lucrative shipments right under their noses. Rourke suspected an insider. A mole. Someone planted within the estate.

When Adeline’s name had first crossed Rourke’s desk, accompanied by logs showing her lingering near the locked records room and asking questions about transport schedules, Elias had felt a cold flicker of disappointment. He prided himself on absolute loyalty; betrayal was the one sin he never forgave.

Yet, as he watched the slender maid gently fold the top of the paper bag and slip toward the North End service gate into the freezing Boston dawn, Elias did something entirely out of character.

He did not call security. He did not wake Bruno Marchetti, his muscle-bound enforcer. He simply set his glass down, pulled on a dark wool overcoat, and walked out to his private garage.

If there was a rat in his house, Elias Baron wanted to watch it run back to its nest with his own eyes.
