Chapter 5 - The Collapse

The phone speaker clicked twice, followed by a crisp, professional automated greeting, then the distinct hum of an international financial routing line.

“Royal Bank of Canada, Corporate Fraud and Asset Verification Division. My name is Agent Miller. How may I direct your call?”

Theresa froze, her face instantly draining of all color. Brianna’s jaw dropped open. Arthur Vance frowned, leaning back in his chair as a sudden, uneasy crease formed between his eyebrows.

"Hello, Agent Miller," I said clearly, looking directly into my mother's terrified eyes. "I’m calling to verify the current liquid balance and legal status of commercial account ending in 7042, registered under the name Nathan Thorne."

There was a brief pause on the line as the agent accessed the secure database.

“One moment, Mr. Thorne... pulling up the registry files now... Access confirmed. Checking current ledger balance.”

The seconds ticked by like lead weights. Arthur cleared his throat nervously, shifting his expensive cufflinks. "Really, Nathan, this theatrical display is entirely unnecessary—"

“Mr. Thorne?” the agent's voice interrupted sharply through the speaker.

"I'm here," I said.

“According to our real-time international ledger, account ending in 7042 currently reflects a total available balance of exactly four hundred and twelve dollars and eighty-five cents ($412.85). Furthermore, there is a formal corporate flag on the file indicating zero incoming wire transfers, zero federal settlements, and zero active industrial litigation payouts associated with your Social Insurance Number.”

The room plunged into an absolute, vacuum-sealed silence.

Theresa slowly turned her head, her eyes wide with mounting horror, staring at me as if I had just transformed into a monster. "Four... four hundred dollars? But... but you said a million! You said you got a settlement!"

"I lied," I said softly, the words dropping like ice cubes into the warm room.

Brianna shrieked, slamming her hands down onto the table so hard the wine glasses rattled. "You lied?! Are you insane?! You dragged us to a five-star restaurant, made us meet with a top-tier financial advisor, and you lied about a million dollars?!"

"I didn't just lie," I replied, my voice hardening into cold steel as I stood up slowly from the table, pulling Lucy up right beside me. "I set a trap. And you walked into it with your eyes wide open."

Arthur Vance stood up hurriedly, grabbing his leather portfolio, his face turning an angry shade of crimson. "What kind of sick game is this?! I am a licensed financial professional! I'm calling security! You wasted my entire evening!"

"Don't bother calling security, Arthur," a sharp, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway of the private dining room.

The side door swung open, and two uniformed Seattle police officers stepped inside, flanked by a tall man in a sharp charcoal suit holding a thick manila folder.

"Detective Marcus, Seattle PD Financial Crimes Unit," the man announced, flashing a shiny silver badge. He walked directly up to the table, looking down at Arthur Vance, then turning his piercing gaze toward Theresa and Brianna.

Arthur’s face turned the color of chalk. "Detective... I don't know what—"

"Save it, Arthur," Detective Marcus interrupted coldly. "Your firm has been under federal surveillance for six months regarding shell-company asset stripping and predatory trust fraud targeting vulnerable families. And thanks to Mr. Thorne’s detailed forensic audit, we have complete documentation of the illegal wire transfers, embezzlement, and tax evasion executed through your agency using funds funneled from Canada."

He turned his gaze toward my mother and sister, who were now trembling uncontrollably in their designer clothes.

"And as for Mrs. Theresa Thorne and Ms. Brianna Thorne," Detective Marcus continued, pulling out a pair of cold steel handcuffs, "you are formally being placed under arrest for severe financial elder exploitation, systematic wire fraud, extortion, and criminal negligence resulting in severe bodily endangerment."

"No! No, you can't arrest us! We're his family!" Theresa screamed hysterically, lunging across the table toward me as the officers moved in and snapped handcuffs around her wrists. "Nathan! Tell them to stop! I'm your mother! How could you do this to your own flesh and blood?!"

"You stopped being my mother the day you decided my wife's life was worth less than a granite countertop," I said, my voice entirely devoid of emotion.

Brianna was sobbing uncontrollably as the second officer clicked cuffs around her wrists, dragging her away from the table as her expensive designer purse hit the floor with a pathetic thud. Arthur Vance was already being read his Miranda rights near the doorway.

As the police escorted my family out of the restaurant in handcuffs, the private dining room grew quiet once more.

I turned down toward Lucy. Her eyes, though still tired and hollowed out by months of suffering, held a sudden, brilliant spark of life I hadn't seen in years. She looked up at me, a faint, genuine smile touching her pale lips for the first time in as long as I could remember.

"Come on, honey," I whispered, wrapping my winter coat gently around her thin shoulders. "Let's go home. The house belongs to us now. And the healing starts tonight."
