Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Library

Over the next two weeks, the dynamic between the cold mafia don and his unapologetic housekeeper shifted into a tense, unspoken war of attrition.

Leo stopped testing the midnight curfew. Whether out of stubborn pride or a strange, grudging respect for the rules, his black town car pulled through the iron gates by 11:45 PM like clockwork every single night. Mina, true to her word, slid the heavy brass deadbolt home at precisely twelve o’clock, listening with quiet satisfaction for the faint hum of his engine idling in the garage.

Despite their clash, the estate functioned with unprecedented precision. The dust was gone, the meals were hot and waiting, and Mina maintained an invisible boundary that kept her entirely out of the syndicate's violent orbit.

Or so she thought.

It was a rainy Thursday afternoon when the fragile bubble burst. Mina was upstairs in the expansive mahogany library, meticulously dusting the upper shelves using a tall wooden step stool. The mansion was dead silent, save for the patter of raindrops against the tall Victorian windows.

As she reached across a row of leather-bound legal folios, her sleeve snagged on a loose brass corner bracket of an old decorative globe sitting on the corner table. The globe wobbled, tilting sideways against a hidden panel in the mahogany wainscoting.

Click.

With a soft, pneumatic hiss, a section of the bookshelf swung inward, revealing a hidden alcove Mina had never noticed before.

She froze on the step stool, her heart skipping a beat.

Rule 3 flashed in her mind with neon clarity: You clean Mr. Moretti’s office, but you never move a single piece of paper on his desk. This, clearly, fell under an even stricter category.

Mina’s common sense screamed at her to step down, close the panel, and pretend she had seen nothing. But human curiosity—and a sudden, sharp chill in the air—got the better of her. She stepped down from the stool and peered cautiously into the dark alcove.

It wasn't just a closet. It was a secondary command center.

Illuminated by the soft blue glow of multiple monitors, the hidden room was lined with secure server racks, surveillance feeds covering the entire perimeter of the estate, and an open metal desk covered in schematic blueprints of downtown Chicago shipping ports.

And lying right in the center of the desk was a physical file folder stamped with a bright red federal seal: CLASSIFIED - DOJ INVESTIGATION.

Mina gasped softly, stepping back. Someone had breached the house’s digital firewall. The federal documents weren't Leo’s property; they were an internal dossier planted by a federal task force—or worse, a rival syndicate trying to frame him from the inside.

Before Mina could turn around and leave, heavy, furious footsteps echoed down the library hallway.

The library doors flew open.

Leo Moretti stood in the threshold, his face carved from granite, his eyes locked directly onto Mina standing half-inside his secret sanctuary.

The air in the room instantly dropped to freezing.

"What," Leo whispered, his voice dangerously low, "are you doing in here?"
