Chapter 4 - The Mask Slips

Lorraine stopped dead in her tracks halfway up the walkway, her expensive heels clicking sharply against the concrete. Her eyes widened slightly as she saw me standing framed in the shattered doorway of her home, flanked by Sergeant Miller.

Jackson pushed past his mother, his expression twisting into an ugly mix of righteous indignation and masked panic.

"Emily? What the hell is going on here?" Jackson barked, storming up the steps. "Why are there police officers at my mother’s house? What kind of hysterical scene are you staging now?"

"Hysterical?" I repeated. The word came out of my mouth like the strike of a rattlesnake.

I reached down, picked up Rosie’s torn body by its remaining arm, and hurled it directly at Jackson’s chest. The dirty cotton stuffing hit his crisp white dress shirt, scattering lint across his lapel before falling to the concrete floor.

Jackson recoiled as if he had been slapped with a live wire. "Have you lost your mind?!"

"Not nearly as much as you and your mother lost your morals," I said, my voice carrying across the quiet suburban street with terrifying clarity. I stepped forward, closing the distance between us until I was inches from his face. "Did you really think you could sell our daughter? Did you think I wouldn't check behind the locked door? Did you think I wouldn't burn your entire criminal enterprise to the ground the moment you laid a finger on my child?"

Jackson’s face drained of color in a fraction of a second. The righteous anger vanished, replaced by the shivering terror of a cornered coward. He looked past me, his eyes darting toward the open doorway where Officer Vance was standing in the hallway holding Mia.

Lorraine, however, didn't flinch. She adjusted the collar of her trench coat, her lips pressing into a thin, venomous line. She looked at me not with guilt, but with profound, aristocratic contempt.

"You ruin everything, Emily," Lorraine said smoothly, her voice dripping with venom. "You were never good enough for this family. You smell like hospital disinfectant and failure. A child like Mia deserves parents who move in circles of actual influence—not a low-level nurse who scrubs bedpans for a living."

"Mom, shut up!" Jackson hissed, panic cracking his voice.

"Don't you dare tell me to shut up, you weak-willed idiot!" Lorraine snapped at her son, her mask of polite suburban matriarch completely incinerated. "If you had married Cassandra’s college roommate like I told you to, we wouldn't be in this mess! We had a buyer lined up who was going to wipe out your entire corporate debt and fund your new venture in Zurich!"

Sergeant Miller didn't wait another second. He unclipped his handcuffs, stepped forward, and slammed them onto Lorraine’s wrists with a definitive, metallic click.

"Lorraine Hayes, you are under arrest for kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy to commit human trafficking," Miller declared, reading her rights with cold, absolute professionalism.

As the cold steel locked around her wrists, Lorraine let out a harsh, bitter laugh, tossing her head back. "You think a pair of handcuffs is going to stop anything? My legal team will have me out by midnight on a writ of habeas corpus before you even finish booking us."

"Not this time, Mother," a new voice called out from the street.

We all turned. Another police cruiser had just pulled up, and stepping out from the passenger side was Cassandra, flanked by a federal agent wearing a windbreaker emblazoned with FBI - Child Exploitation Task Force.

Cassandra walked up the driveway, her eyes red from crying, but her posture straight and unyielding. She stopped a few feet from her mother.

"I already downloaded Mom’s master financial ledger from her home office safe and handed it directly to Special Agent Vance," Cassandra said, her voice steady. "Every wire transfer, every offshore account, every forged adoption document involving Jackson and Mom’s network is already in federal hands. You aren't getting bail, Mom. You're going away for a very, very long time."

Lorraine’s arrogant facade finally fractured. Her eyes bulged with genuine horror as she realized her own daughter had delivered the final, fatal blow to her empire.
