Chapter 4 - The Arrival of the Iron Fleet

I crossed the hospital room on silent feet, pulling back the heavy vinyl blinds just an inch. Below, parked in the restricted ambulance bay, were three unmarked federal vehicles and a local police cruiser. Red and blue emergency lights flashed silently against the brick exterior of the hospital, casting eerie, pulsing shadows across the courtyard.
Before I could turn back toward the bed, the door to my room pushed open.
It wasn't a nurse. It wasn't security. It was two federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers, accompanied by a tall, sharp-featured woman carrying an official folder bearing the seal of the United States District Court.
"Mrs. Hayes?" the lead agent asked, his voice calm, authoritative, and respectful. "I’m Special Agent Miller with federal investigative services. We have an emergency recovery warrant signed by a federal judge regarding your infant son, Noah Hayes."
My breath hitched. They had names. They had the real name.
"He's here," I choked out, pointing toward the bassinet where little Leo—no, Noah—was sleeping peacefully, completely unaware that his mother was fighting a war to keep him safe from his own father. "Take him out of this hospital. Take him somewhere secure. My husband is coming back tonight."
"We already have jurisdiction over your husband," Agent Miller said calmly, stepping aside as a local detective walked into the room holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. Behind the detective stood Mark, his hands already locked behind his back, his face drained of every drop of color.
Mark’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic when he saw me standing upright beside the bassinet, holding my phone with the federal warrant displayed on the screen. The mask of the grieving, loving father shattered into a million jagged pieces, revealing the desperate, cornered coward beneath.
"Clara—baby, listen to me," Mark stammered, straining against the detective's grip as they pushed him into the center of the room. "It’s a misunderstanding! The business deal... it was for our family's future! I did it for us!"
"Shut your mouth," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried the absolute, crushing weight of a collapsing mountain. I stepped forward, stopping inches from him, looking into the eyes of the man who had traded our flesh and blood for a corporate bailout. "You didn't do it for us, Mark. You did it because you thought I was invisible. You thought a mother's instinct was something you could trade away like a spare part."
Mark looked around the room, desperately searching for sympathy from the federal agents, but found only stone-cold contempt. "Clara, please... we can fix this. Don't ruin our lives."

"Our lives were ruined the moment you decided our children had a price tag," I replied coldly, turning my back on him. "Take him out of my sight."
The detectives hauled Mark out of the room, his frantic, pathetic pleas echoing down the corridor until the heavy wooden doors swung shut, cutting him off from our lives forever.
